The Wine Economist will pause for a few days and return in early 2025. Sue and I wish all our reader friends a warm holiday season and a bright new year.
Sue is curious about what wines you are serving for the holidays. Are you willing to share your selections — or those you are considering — in the Comments section below? We are always looking for good ideas!
We haven’t finalized our choices yet, but some will be Italian wines to pair with Brodetto on Christmas Eve and Tagliatelle al Ragù on Christmas Day. Stilton and Vintage Port will appear along with Sue’s delicious panforte and pampepato treats. And something with bubbles, too, don’t you think? Lots of possibilities!
Cheers to the new year. See you in 2025.

About the Luca Ferraris Ruchè in the photo above in the festive santa hat. We were fortunate to receive Ruchè samples recently (thank you, Mallard Libations). This is a unique wine so we are giving some thoought to food pairings. I have called Ruchè one of Italy’s “invisible wines.” Sue and I look forward to enjoying these examples and we hope to see more of the wines in shops and restaurants in the new year!
Mike: Thanks for the steady stream of insightful columns every week. Your hard work is valued and appreciated. Toriga National from Portugal and Aglianico from Italy are scheduled pours here for the holidays.
For Terri’s birthday today we will pour Hyde de Villaine Chardonnay Comandante with steamed king crab. Tomorrow’s prime rib will be accompanied by. 2008 Cade Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Best to both of you!
Mike: Season’s Greetings to you and Sue. Bubbles, indeed! Malibran Prosecco from the Veneto region north of Venice, as well as a taste-off between a Caymus Cab and a Silver Oak from the Alexander Valley. Cheers! . . . to a great 2025.
Happy Holidays to all! We opened a 2012 Stags Leap Merlot for my Birthday last night. The first sip was a bit dry but after decanting for 20 minutes the bouquet was fabulous the and the wine smooth. Paired very well with Turkey and Brie.
Hey, Mike! I haven’t had Ruche, but would love your thoughts on it in the meantime. I opened a 1997 S. Anderson Richard Chambers Vineyard Napa Cab. I’ve been drinking my last bottles. i had 1 each from 93-98 and am down to the last few. the 97 was so elegant and just showing beautifully. The winery was bought by Canadian Developer Cliff Lede, and I believe the fruit is now in their “Poetry” bottling. Hope all is well! Daniel
It is great to hear from you, Daniel! We will post anb article about the Ruche in early Feb. Please keep in touch.
