$\begingroup$ Thanks for your insightful answer. But is it writing? I searched for what you said, and found this: britannica.com/art/printmaking/Lithography#ref397227 . $\endgroup$Jayadevan Vijayan– Jayadevan Vijayan2022-12-18 17:08:23 +00:00Commented Dec 18, 2022 at 17:08

$\begingroup$ @JoeW Maybe I should have included back reading. /A printing press is a mechanical device for applying pressure to an inked surface resting upon a print medium (such as paper or cloth), thereby transferring the ink./ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Printing_press $\endgroup$Willk– Willk2022-12-18 17:09:25 +00:00Commented Dec 18, 2022 at 17:09

$\begingroup$ @JayadevanVijayan - my proposal is essentially a lithograph. It can be automated and meets your 4 criteria as regards the end product. $\endgroup$Willk– Willk2022-12-18 17:11:56 +00:00Commented Dec 18, 2022 at 17:11

1$\begingroup$ I think you're on to it with the second part. Similar to a printing press, you would be laying a track of letters to tell the mechanical pen how to move. There may be several different "a" letters, depending on what came before it and what comes after, to keep the track smoothly connected. You could still do dots and spaces, I think, by having areas of the track that lift the pen from the paper while still guiding it on its journey. It would be painstaking to lay but once laid, it can print (write!) as many times as you want copies of the page. $\endgroup$JamieB– JamieB2022-12-19 21:24:18 +00:00Commented Dec 19, 2022 at 21:24

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. science-based), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
