Vintage Gateleg Drop-Leaf Table, Two-Tone Hardwood, Imperial Grand Rapids
Vintage Gateleg Drop-Leaf Table, Two-Tone Hardwood, Imperial Grand Rapids

Vintage Gateleg Drop-Leaf Table, Two-Tone Hardwood, Imperial Grand Rapids

Located in Rolling Hills Estates, CA

This vintage gateleg drop-leaf table was made by the Imperial Furniture Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and carries the firm's printed paper label inside its single apron drawer: a green crowned shield reading "Imperial / Grand Rapids / Mich." beside a gilt banner, "Made in Grand Rapids." Hinged leaves and a swing-out gate at each side raise the top to a full oval or fold it to a narrow console about fourteen inches deep, the height staying just under twenty-nine inches in either state. The top is a reddish-brown wood with a straight, lightly striped figure that reads as mahogany, set over a paler turned base consistent with birch or maple; the legs are baluster-and-ring turned and meet turned stretchers. The top, as received, carried water rings and discoloration and was refinished with a clear natural sealer, no stain. Rather than color the two woods to match, each was left its own color, so the reddish top and the pale base stand apart. Imperial worked in Grand Rapids from 1903 to 1962 and was particularly known for its tables; the circa 1920–1935 date is inferred from the label style and the William and Mary Revival...
