The Spell Sword (Darkover) Kindle Edition

Callista, a Keeper at Arilinn Tower, has been abducted and confined so that she cannot reach even her twin sister Ellemir telepathically. The only person she can reach is a Terran, Andrew Carr, who has no idea what is going on. His search for his "ghost-girl" crash-lands him in the mountains, an experience he barely survives. Meanwhile Ellemir has sent for her kinsman, Damon Ridenow, a sorcerer trained at Arilinn, to find and rescue Callista. Damon, however is no swordsman; the person for that job would be the girls' father, who has just been crippled by a Cat-men attack. All three men are needed to rescue Callista, and they will need to harness the magic of the spell sword to succeed.

Marion Zimmer was born in Albany, NY, on June 3, 1930, and married Robert Alden Bradley in 1949. Mrs. Bradley received her B.A. in 1964 from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, then did graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1965-67.

She was a science fiction/fantasy fan from her middle teens, but wrote only for school magazines and fanzines until 1952, when she sold her first professional short story to VORTEX SCIENCE FICTION. She wrote everything from science fiction to Gothics, but is probably best known for her Darkover novels.

In addition to her novels, Mrs. Bradley edited many magazines, amateur and professional, including Marion Zimmer Bradley's FANTASY Magazine, which she started in 1988. She also edited an annual anthology called SWORD AND SORCERESS for DAW Books.

Over the years she turned more to fantasy; THE HOUSE BETWEEN THE WORLDS was "fantasy undiluted." She wrote a best-selling novel of the women in the Arthurian legends--Morgan Le Fay, the Lady of the Lake, and others--entitled MISTS OF AVALON, and she also wrote THE FIREBRAND, a novel about the women of the Trojan War. Her historical fantasy novels, THE FOREST HOUSE and LADY OF AVALON are prequels to MISTS OF AVALON.

She died in Berkeley, California on September 25, 1999, four days after suffering a major heart attack. She was survived by her brother, Leslie Zimmer; her sons, David Bradley and Mark Greyland; her daughter, Moira Greyland; and her grandchildren.

Explains the early years on Darkover- so if you've only read the later era ones, you have to go back and read this one.

Requires no prior knowledge of the Darkover series. Not as complex or enthralling as standouts like Heritage of Hastur or The Shattered chain, it is a straightforward adventure story with two male protagonists ( Damon Ridenow and newly landed Terran Andrew Carr) and a simple romance between Andrew and Callista Alton.

The Kindle version is riddled with typos/errors

I'd like to stress that the rating isn't for the book content itself - this is purely about the quality of the e-book version.

And the quality is nonexistent. It started out with a few of the usual problems: minor characters like ' or . missing.

While I was disgruntled that this happened in a book I paid for I could live with those tiny things missing. But from around 50%-60% onwards the book feels like whoever had the job of proofreading decided to give up or skip a few chapters.

"I"s became "1"s, "I can" turned into "lean" "Andrew Carr" became "Andrew Can" and other fun stuff.

I'm usually not picky with those kind of things but the insane amount of errors made the book very uncomfortable to read. Not what I'd usually expect from something I paid ~8$ for.

2 stars instead of one because I DID read it to the end regardless of the errors.

I really hope they will fix it and update it with a spell-checked version, I love the book and I love the fact that it's finally available for Kindle.
