What makes a great project

At the Eclipse Foundation, we host open source projects that thrive on collaboration, transparency, and neutrality. Our community-led approach ensures that every project, whether a developer framework, technology platform, or cross-industry initiative, receives the support it needs to grow and succeed.

We're especially well-suited for projects that unite contributors across organisations, rely on open innovation, or aim to set new standards in their field. With trusted governance, clear IP management, and a sustainable community model, the Eclipse Foundation is where open source projects grow into ecosystems.

Starting a project: what to expect

Getting started

Launching a project at the Eclipse Foundation means joining a well-governed, transparent, and community-focused ecosystem. Here's how the process works:

  1. Submit a proposal

Define your project’s goals, scope, initial contributors, and technical context.

  2. Community review

Your proposal is posted publicly to gather community feedback and support.

  3. Project creation and provisioning

The Eclipse Management Organization (EMO) provisions your project infrastructure, including Git repositories, issue tracking, mailing lists, and project metadata, and formally launches your project in the Incubation phase.

  4. Intellectual Property review

Your team moves your codebase into resources provided by the Eclipse Foundation. Our team reviews your code to validate provenance and licence.

  5. Active development

You and your team continue working on your project following the Eclipse Foundation Development Process (EDP).
