Origin and history of vilification

vilification(n.)

"the act of defaming," 1650s, from Medieval Latin vilificationem (nominative vilificatio), noun of action from past-participle stem of Late Latin vilificare "make of little value" (see vilify). Donne (1620s) used it in a sense of "degradation, humiliation."
