"When it comes to Venezuelan-style hot dogs, crispy potato sticks are a must," Hunn said. "They add that salty crunch that contrasts beautifully with the softness of the bun and the juiciness of the hot dog." While some people may choose to make their own, grabbing a bag of potato sticks from the supermarket — we like these ones by Better Made — is the easiest and most popular way to include these. When added to the hot dog, they bring an element that you may have never known was missing from a traditional one. "It's about texture and fun[;] each bite is layered and satisfying," Hunn added. How to make a Venezuelan-style hot dog at home

While you can grab one of these hot dogs from a Venezuelan restaurant or food truck, it's super fun and easy to make them yourself. "To build one at home, load it up with sauces like ketchup, mustard, mayo (often all three!), and even a garlic or avocado-based sauce if you're feeling adventurous," Nicole Hunn said. "I like to add shredded cabbage or lettuce, a bit of grated cheese, and then top the whole thing off with a generous handful of those crunchy potato sticks." When choosing which cheese to use, we recommend cotija. It's crumbly, salty, and tangy, and the traditional choice.

Of course, if you have any dietary restrictions, it's important to make sure you're following your specific diet's rules. "For a gluten-free version, just double-check that your potato sticks and condiments are certified GF," Hunn recommended. "Most are, but it's worth confirming." You'll also want to use a gluten-free bun if this is the case — gluten-free bread can be more expensive than mainstream types, but worth it when you're craving a tasty hot dog.
