Who doesn't love watching hummingbirds? The energetic little birds' beauty and impressive aerial maneuvers make them a joy to watch. But what can you do if these fluttering pollinators seem to ignore your yard? You've likely already bought or made a hummingbird feeder, but maybe the little birds just don't notice it. One clever way to attract the attention of hummingbirds and bring them to your yard is by tying orange or red ribbons around some of your trees.
Hummingbirds are attracted to the colors orange, red, and pink, making ribbons of those colors ideal for encouraging the little birds to visit. Tying a few pieces of orange poly satin waterproof ribbon from Royal Imports (or a similar product) around a few of your trees could add just the splash of color necessary to bring all the hummingbirds to your garden. Just be sure you have a clean feeder and plenty of their favorite flowers ready for the hummingbirds when they arrive.
Why are hummingbirds attracted to certain colors?
Hummingbirds find their favorite flowers by sight and consistently show a preference for plants with tubular flowers, which are perfect for fitting their long beaks into. They also seem to have especially well-developed vision for colors like reds and oranges – though they can also see other colors, including ultraviolet. Bees don't see the color red very well, by contrast, making red and orange flowers especially dependent on hummingbirds for pollination and more likely to have large amounts of nectar for them.
Hummingbirds' love of the colors red and orange is why so many hummingbird feeders are red. While it used to be common to also add red dye to the nectar in feeders, this is no longer recommended. Once you've successfully attracted hummingbirds to your yard with your orange or red ribbons, be sure to reward them for their visit by having plenty of their favorite flowers. They'll be especially happy if you plant red salvia, agastache, and cardinal flowers for them.
