When it comes to natural nails, ensuring they are healthy and strong isn't just a matter of aesthetics, as nail changes can tell us a lot about our health. If your nails are on the thinner side and seem to be consistently breaking, or if you're noticing any persistent discoloration on them, visiting a board-certified dermatologist is always a good idea. However, if you struggle with the infamous "most of my nails are fine, but there's always that one that chips" problem, there are some things you can actually do to ensure your natural nails stay strong and healthy.
In an exclusive conversation with Glam, celebrity and editorial manicurist Sonya Meesh explains just what nail shape is best for having strong, long nails. "Natural nails without any enhancements are harder to maintain when they are square," Meesh tells us. "This is because the edges can get caught easily on things and break." However, if super square nails are your thing, Meesh clarifies that you can absolutely still rock them. "Not to say it's impossible to maintain, it totally is — but if you're hard on your hands, it may not be for you," the expert adds.
This shape helps your nails stay stronger and healthier for longer
While most people tend to pick their nail shape based on an aesthetic preference, if you do keep your nails without any enhancements, there is a specific shape that can help prevent your nails from chipping and breaking. "I find that a rounded edge (even if you have a square [shape]) will extend the life of your nail shape," Sonya Meesh shares exclusively with Glam. The reason behind this is the lack of an edge that can easily get caught on things.
Of course, if you find that they are still breaking even with a rounded edge, chances are that this is a sign your nails are not healthy. In fact, there are quite a few things you might not realize are damaging your nails. It is often a lack of a balanced diet that can cause cracked and peeling nails, so adding nutritious and healthy foods rich in biotin, B vitamins, iron, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids to your daily routine might result in a noticeable change.
Tips for keeping your nails healthy and strong
Having a good nail-care routine is crucial if you are someone who likes to show off their natural nails. "Really, what keeps your nails strong and healthy is regular maintenance and hydration," Sonya Meesh tells us exclusively. "Keeping your hands, cuticles, and nails (underneath, too) hydrated!" In fact, even if you get nail enhancements done regularly, an at-home routine will still benefit your nails.
"A simple treatment goes a long way," the expert adds. "There are so many great ones on the market: Essie just released a new treatment for after-gel removals," Meesh shares, pointing to Essie's To The Rescue UV Gel Damage Repair Treatment. They add that "Dermelect has quite a few options depending on the condition of your nails," too, including the Dermelect Rejuvenail Fortifying Nail & Cuticle Treatment.
