We Gave The Women Of Yellowstone Major Hair Makeovers
Have you ever run into an old acquaintance who's had a big glow-up or aesthetic shift and barely recognized them? Sometimes, we get so attached to actors in a particular role that the same thing happens. Maybe the performer is a proven chameleon, or maybe a character is just so iconic that it's hard to imagine their look any other way. The end result is the same: Catching them in different costuming or, shocker, a different hairstyle can be tough to compute.
For us, a lot of the larger-than-life women of the "Yellowstone" universe fit this bill. Who could imagine Teeter without her signature pink hair or Monica with — brace for it — blond hair? Well, consider this challenge accepted. Just for fun, we put our Photoshop specialist to the task of reimagining four ladies of "Yellowstone" with drastically different hairstyles, and the results were illuminating.
Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton would still be striking with dark hair
Leading lady Beth Dutton is a spitfire and, occasionally, a loose cannon — a fact reflected in her tousled blond hairstyle. And while Beth Dutton from "Yellowstone" looks pretty different in real life, her on-screen styling certainly works. For one, actor Kelly Reilly is naturally a redhead, which may be why the strawberry-coded undertones of Beth's blond hair suit the actor so well. Moreover, Beth's adaptable hairstyle marries with the versatility of her carefully designed wardrobe. As "Yellowstone" costume designer Johnetta Boone told Elle, "Beth is well-traveled, yet it's important we still show she's from Montana. We show her softer side with prairie dresses and florals ... but she also has a strong business style with European flair." In casual scenes, this often means her blond tresses are loose, wild, and windblown — a bit like Beth herself. However, her long cut also means that Beth can put together a chic updo when it's time to make a power play.
But how would our perception of Beth change with a shift in her go-to hairstyle? A little tweak in Photoshop suggests that dark hair also wouldn't go amiss. The Glam team mocked up a shot of Beth with chopped, shoulder-length layers in a rich cocoa hue, and it shows a different side of both Reilly and her "Yellowstone" persona. Fundamentally, the color looks great with the actor's skin tone and actually brings out her bright eyes even more than her usual blond shade. As for Beth, it also lends her character a different gravitas — something serious and weighty, a stable confidence that's more like we usually see from her strategic frenemy, Lynelle Perry. This begged the question: What if we swapped Perry's look as well?
Wendy Moniz's portrayal of Lynelle Perry would have different nuance if she had blond hair
As Lynelle Perry in "Yellowstone," Wendy Moniz typically appears with carefully coiffed brown curls that fall just below her jawline. Paired with an array of power suits, it's a more conservative look than that of many other female characters, which makes sense for Perry's in-show journey as a political figure. As one fan described on Facebook, "Lynelle Perry from 'Yellowstone' embodies a blend of power, wisdom, and unwavering confidence. A true image of female empowerment, proving that strength can be both fierce and elegant." In short, her aesthetic favors the same kind of restraint as her characterization.
But as we're currently learning from many real-world politicians, there can be a fair amount of leeway in a representative's personal style — just look at the rise of "Mar-a-Lago face" and its worst offenders. With these evolving standards in mind, we wondered what Governor Perry would look like in a more relaxed hairstyle. To reinvent Perry's appearance without straying too far from that core of quiet strength, Glam's Photoshop wizard refreshed her look with a mid-length blond balayage, including just a hint of dark roots to ground the style.
Without a doubt, the shift to blond locks softens Perry's appearance, even when holding onto deeper undertones and naturally dark brows. It's an extremely pretty look that captures the free-wheeling spirit of her state and would look just as fabulous on Moniz in real life. But at the same time, it robs Perry of a little sternness that she sometimes needs to hold her ground in all of the upheaval "Yellowstone" brings, so maybe her character should hold off on the bleach until after she retires from public office.
Dark waves would be a departure for both Teeter and actor Jen Landon
We already know that gritty, foul-mouthed, and notoriously pink-haired ranch hand Teeter from "Yellowstone" is actually gorgeous in real life. We also know that actor Jen Landon typically sticks to short, light hairstyles in various shades of blond when she's not playing her part on Dutton Ranch. So, visualizing either Teeter or Landon with long, dark waves is almost baffling, making her Photoshop makeover all the more impactful. In fact, we're so used to Teeter's rowdy, edgy aesthetic that seeing her with mermaid tresses is like encountering a whole different person.
Once we get over the shock, though, we can see how gentle curls would suit the performer for certain roles, or even if she just felt like a personal change. Opting for a longer cut would gentle the chiseled planes of Landon's amazing bone structure, while trying out a deep hair color like mahogany would complement the natural warmth in her complexion. Would it suit Teeter's rough-and-ready characterization? Not at all. But we think it'd be beautiful for some other part down the road in Landon's career.
Kelsey Asbille's skin tone would look divine with honey-blond locks
Of all the hypothetical makeovers on our list, we may be most obsessed with the reimagining of Kelsey Asbille with ashy tresses. Asbille, who plays Monica in "Yellowstone," is already stunning in real life, sharing her character's naturally dark hair. However, we would pay real money to see her mix it up with a touch of blond. Don't get us wrong, Asbille and Monica both look incredible with sultry brunette locks, but as Photoshop shows, a creamy, mid-toned blond resonates with Asbille's complexion in a whole different way. The actor — who is of British, Taiwanese, and Cherokee descent — has beautiful skin, and by playing into the golden hues of her skin tone to create a glamorous, almost monochromatic look, blond would be a super-exciting remix on the "Don't Move" star.
Of course, the trick here would be the same as for anyone considering the leap to a lighter hue — ensuring your blond color is right for your skin tone (and undertone). While Asbille could probably pull off just about any hairstyle, going too platinum or even too yellow might not suit her as perfectly as a more understated blond. Fingers crossed that we get to find out with some creative styling in Asbille's future roles.
