The Outdated Fashion Color We're Saying Goodbye To In 2025 (& What To Wear Instead)

When it comes to fashion trends, it's not just shapes and silhouettes that go in and out of style. Color plays a huge role in what's hot and what's not. Remember when nostalgia had a moment with the Barbiecore fashion trend a few years ago? Folks everywhere were wearing various shades of pink, which reached its height when the "Barbie" movie finally came out in the summer of 2023. Then, in 2024, "Brat" green became the new Barbie pink, inspired by the colors of Charlie XCX's "Brat" album cover. Even Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba from "Wicked" helped make green the color of the year. However, "Brat" and "Wicked" greens had their moment but are now decidedly outdated. "I think it was a short-lived color micro trend. We are leaning into less saturated hues and softer color palettes this spring/summer," Amanda Vargus, stylist and founder of Wave + Woven Style House, exclusively explains to Glam. Vargus adds that another issue with "Brat" green was that it didn't complement every skin tone, while this year's trends do.

If you're a green lover and need to update your wardrobe, opt for more neutral shades. "I am always a fan of olive green (a universal shade that looks good on everyone), which seems to be very prominent this season. In addition, I'm seeing a lot of sage green, which is really soft and beautiful," Vargus tells us. Something like the Dokotoo Women's Casual Loose Overalls Jumpsuit would be perfect this summer. Pistachio is also a huge warm-weather color for 2025 and is an unexpected pastel alternative to pink and yellow. While softer shades of green are hot, don't inundate your closet with just one palette. Instead, round out your pieces with other trendy colors that you'll see everywhere this year.

Earthy colors are reigning supreme in 2025

Bright and bubbly colors of the past are now making way for more down-to-earth shades, and, in fact, color trendsetter Pantone named Mocha Mousse — a rich, chocolaty shade of brown — as the premier color of 2025. "Browns pair well with a less saturated color palette, so try this as a neutral alternative to black," Amanda Vargus exclusively tells us. If you're looking for inspiration for this spring and summer, consider going the Prada route. The fashion house incorporated brown into its 2025 collection in many ways, including with a striped bathing suit featuring brown, blue, and white that could also beautifully double as a bodysuit. A less-expensive option that could be paired with many other items would be a classic brown sweater like the EFAN Women's Oversized Crewneck Sweatshirt. And when the weather gets chilly again, brown suede jackets will give you that classic '90s-inspired look for fall.

Some other colors that are trending in 2025 are butter yellow, pastel blue, and burgundy, Vargus tells us. Consider making brown your base color and then adding touches of rich hues to your outfit. For example, if you're wearing a chocolate-hued sweater, layer a light-blue button-down shirt like the Women's Smocked Cuffed Striped Boyfriend Shirt underneath it, and let the collars and hem pop out. Brown and burgundy are gorgeous pairings for fall, but make sure there's enough contrast between the two shades so your 'fit doesn't look overly monochromatic. The best part about these earthy colors is that they have longevity, so your pieces are sure to be staples for years to come, not a short-lived fad.
