Staying stocked up on toilet paper seems to be more important than ever nowadays, presenting an all-new challenge in keeping them tidy in the bathroom. Well, maybe it's less of a challenge and more of a fun project for a DIYer, especially when you think about all the custom creations boasting the storage and aesthetics you demand. If you're an IKEA fan, one particular KALLAX hack could be the affordable solution you've always wanted from one of the store's most versatile collections. No, we're not rehashing the unique bathroom storage you can create with the popular KALLAX shelves. Instead, this bathroom toilet paper holder only uses the KALLAX Wire Basket and spare wood — a minimum investment delivering maximum style points.

Instagram creator @easyalex offers the inspiration to make the KALLAX basket into a handy wall-hanging piece to store spare TP rolls near the toilet. Start by removing the long hook that would normally hold the basket under a shelf. Cut the two sides off where they meet the basket. A saw with a metal-cutting blade will make quick work of it, but the wires should be manageable with tin snips or bolt cutters. If you don't have anything else, check to see if your pliers have a hidden feature to help shear through thin metal. The cut may be rough, but you can clean it up by filing or carefully cutting the nubs left behind. Now, you just need to add the top shelf and put it on the wall!

Assembling your IKEA KALLAX toilet paper shelf

After cutting off the KALLAX basket's hook, you have space to add a shelf on the open end. Measure the length and width, and cut a spare board to fit. Fresh plywood will work, but this can also be a creative way to repurpose leftover floor scraps and other spare pieces to save you some money. Prep the board as needed. Sand and finish it with stain or paint to complement your bathroom's decor. Since it will likely encounter some humidity in the bathroom, add a protective finish like varnish or tung oil to prevent damage.

To attach the wood shelf to the KALLAX basket, you can use the bent washer hack seen in the video or simplify things by installing Z-clips, like these SeptCity Table Top Fasteners. Put the wooden board on the floor upside down. Place the basket on it (also upside down) in the desired configuration. Install two Z-clips per side and at the back, keeping them tightly locked around the metal frame as you screw them to the wood shelf. Concealed fasteners provide a clean look. But you can also get some fashionable brass bolts to match the KALLAX finish, leaving the heads exposed at the top to ensure this toilet paper storage solution becomes an eye-catching focal point in the room. Finish up by hanging it on the wall. Drill pilot holes to install anchors, if needed, and add screws to let it hang by the basket.
