We are deeply saddened to share the news that our founder and dear friend, Ken Harrison, passed away on March 31, 2026, at the age of 83, surrounded by family and loved ones. Following a successful business career in Portland, Oregon, Ken’s passion for Cabernet Sauvignon led he and his wife, Ginger, to explore the Walla Walla Valley in the late 1990s, with the enduring conviction that the region’s unique terroir could produce wines of global distinction. Through that journey, the Harrisons discovered our historic farmstead. In a 2017 interview, Ken reflected, “I didn’t have a vision for Abeja at the time. I had a vision for the property; (it) was magical. Looking at the views and the history that was encapsulated in the barns—it told a story. The vision sort of emerged of how to present and create Abeja after we lived here for a little while—and could discover the magic and think about ways to preserve it and, in a way, honor it.” Ken was particularly drawn to the architectural framework. His meticulous attention can be found in every detail of our estate from the timeless spaces and landscapes, to rejuvenated antiques, custom-made doors and hardware. He understood that the commitment to craftsmanship required around the estate was the same dedication required from the land to the cellar that brings a sense of place to world-class wine. He established a culture of that same care and precision to the guest experience through kindness, friendship, patience, and generosity. He wanted our staff and guests alike to feel a sense of connection. You’d often find Ken getting to know a guest on the patio over a special bottle from his cellar—or moving out of the Farmhouse for the summer so guests of The Inn could enjoy it, because he believed it was meant to be shared. After a full day of work, he loved nothing more than challenging staff to a friendly game of ping-pong or gin rummy—often to their defeat. While outside our gates what he accomplished will forever leave its mark on Washington’s wine and hospitality history, within them he built something just as meaningful—a sense of family and a place of reprieve. “I could never have imagined how much fun we would have, I’d say mostly with the people that would come into our lives.” For all of us who had the privilege of knowing this incredible man, we could never have imagined the richness he would bring to our lives. He will be forever in our hearts as we will continue to honor the magic that he set into motion at Abeja.

From early mornings in the vines to late nights in the cellar, every bottle of Abeja wine begins with their passion, precision, and a whole lot of hard work.
