More businesses in East Africa are looking for affordable, reliable power. Orb Energy is meeting that need by helping commercial and industrial businesses switch to solar. Acumen first backed Orb Energy in India in 2011 as its first institutional investor and saw it grow over the next 9 years before exiting. Now, KawiSafi Ventures' investment will support its expansion across East Africa.
Today, we're announcing a $2 million investment in Orb Energy to expand its commercial and industrial solar business across East Africa. Orb’s Africa business, headquartered in Nairobi, has already installed close to 15 MW of rooftop solar for more than 60 C&I customers across the region, including businesses in manufacturing, agro-processing, healthcare and hospitality, with a growing pipeline of projects in the wider region. KawiSafi Fund II is backing Orb as it takes that business into its next phase of growth. The investment will provide additional capital to move projects from development and contracting into construction, while supporting Orb’s local team and partnerships with financiers. We're delighted to partner with Orb to accelerate the shift to cleaner, more reliable energy in Africa, growing the distributed energy market for enterprises while lowering costs and emissions.
