A good read from AgNavigator on AgTech getting back to fundamentals. One point particularly resonated: We don’t necessarily have a shortage of innovation The challenge is turning great science into something that can actually be adopted, financed and scaled. Too often, commercialisation is treated as something to solve once the technology is ready. I think the economics, regulatory pathway, customer requirements and route to scale need to develop alongside the science. Could retailers and other supply-chain players offer agtech a route beyond the traditional VC model? Despite the tough investment environment, Dr Belinda Clarke OBE from the UK innovation ecosystem builder Agri-TechE says is “increasingly positive” about the funding landscape. That’s because a broader mix of public funding, private capital and direct involvement from retailers and other supply-chain businesses could help start-ups demonstrate commercial revenues earlier and reduce their dependence on grants. She also stresses why the next opportunities in agtech are more about integrating technologies around real farm problems, rather than searching for the next standalone breakthrough.
