Experience is incredibly valuable in business. It can also become limiting if we're not careful. The longer you've worked in an industry, the easier it becomes to rely on what you've seen before. You recognize patterns faster, but you can also become quicker to dismiss an idea because "we've tried that" or "that's not how this industry works." After more than two decades in this business, I value experience tremendously. However, I look forward to continuously allowing curiosity to coexist with my experience.

Grateful for the opportunity to attend the Indianapolis Business Journal Power Breakfast focused on the future of health benefits and the challenges facing employers and employees today. As a plan administrator, I don’t take lightly the responsibility that comes with making decisions that directly impact the healthcare experience of our employees and their families. Every choice has a ripple effect — from access and affordability to quality of care and overall wellbeing. These conversations are an important reminder that benefits are more than a line item on a budget. They are an investment in people. I’m thankful for the opportunity to learn from industry leaders, hear different perspectives, and continue thinking critically about how we can make thoughtful, sustainable decisions that serve our employees well. Grateful for the dialogue, the insights, and the responsibility. Thank you to Apex Benefits for their sponsorship and invite. Great job on the panel Amber Chittenden 🫶🏾 #IBJPowerBreakfast #EmployeeBenefits #Healthcare #Leadership #EmployeeWellbeing

  • Is your benefits strategy stuck in the past? A “set-it-and-forget-it” approach to employee benefits can be costly. When no one asks whether your strategy still works, plans can quickly become outdated. In the next episode of Break the Cycle, @Amanda Gilbert shares real-world stories of employers who were losing money by sticking with strategies that had stopped working and what happened when they decided to change direction. I've become increasingly convinced that one of the most underrated advantages in business is the ability to make a decision. Not recklessly. Not without the right information. But without allowing the pursuit of certainty to create unnecessary inaction. Some decisions will be wrong. I'd rather build an organization capable of recognizing that quickly, adjusting, and moving forward than one that needs perfect information before it moves.

  • Breaking the cycle starts with asking the right question. In the latest episode of Break the Cycle, @Amanda Gilbert explores how employers can end up overpaying for health benefits when their broker isn’t proactively evaluating whether the plan is still working. Health care is constantly changing. Your benefits strategy should be, too. Hear real-world examples of employers whose plans were falling behind and how the right strategies and the right partner helped them change direction. • Most benefits reviews start and end with price. Compare the fees. Negotiate the renewal. Move on. Meanwhile, the decision that actually determines what an employer pays for the next five years, the strategy behind the plan, never gets touched. Amanda Gilbert, Apex's VP of Client Strategy and Engagement, has sat in enough of these rooms to know the pattern. Employers stay with the same broker for 10-plus years, not because the results are strong, but because change feels harder than staying put. In this episode of #BreaktheCyclePodcast, Amanda sits down with Josh Schumacher and walks through what happens when that pattern breaks. A private university facing a difficult renewal brought its president, HR leadership, and CFO to the table with Apex, and together they built a custom network around the local health system their employees already trusted, without forcing anyone onto a plan they didn't recognize. The result: real savings, minimal disruption, and a multi-year path toward a funding strategy built around their actual population instead of a national template. Complacency has a cost. You need a trusted advisor to ensure you don't see the invoice for it. Watch the full episode here or wherever you get your podcasts: https://lnkd.in/guwwqwpB

There's a difference between saying what sets your organization apart, and being able to demonstrate it. This video was created to capture what Apex stands for, how we approach our work, and the expectations we continue to set for ourselves and our industry. After it was shown at the SHRM conference last week, I received an unexpected note from an HR Director who had seen it and was compelled to reach out about how much she enjoyed it. That response reinforced something important. When your message reflects who you truly are as an organization, it resonates. If you haven't watched it yet, it's worth 2 minutes of your time to get a brief look at what continues to drive us at Apex!
