The Way Home for New Yorkers Experiencing Homelessness

About us

BRC is one of New York City's largest providers of housing and services for individuals experiencing homelessness. Founded in 1971 by a group of recovering alcoholics living in poverty in the Bowery’s infamous flophouses, these individuals had hope, and a firm belief that better days lay ahead. BRC serves nearly 13,000 individuals each year, operating more than 30 programs throughout the greater metropolitan area. The organization’s robust continuum of housing and services includes over 3,700 units of transitional and permanent housing; outreach and case management programs; and substance use and medical services. Together, these programs offer a caring and effective path from homelessness to home, providing comprehensive services that guide everyone on their unique journey.

  • As a part of BRC’s Workforce Development Program, Turner Construction Company volunteered and welcomed our clients to their corporate office for a meaningful day of career support and professional development.   Throughout the event, the Turner volunteers shared their time, expertise, insights and helped clients strengthen their resumes, practice mock interviews and build confidence. We are grateful to Turner and all the volunteers who helped support our clients on their professional journeys.

  • Timothy, a BRC client in the Bronx, has been dealing with homelessness off and on since he was a child. He was kicked out of his mother’s home and had to grow up really quickly. He has struggled with his mental health for years, and a physical altercation at a previous job led to his incarceration. After getting out of jail, he decided to turn his life around. Timothy has two sons and he wants to be there for his kids, so they don’t have to grow up like he did. He admitted himself into the shelter system and has been engaging with BRC’s workforce development and job readiness programming to create a path of stability for him and his children. It is because of donors like you, BRC is able to provide services like workforce development which in turn helps our clients build more stable futures. Your support makes all this possible.

  • Running for a cause! Our BRC Junior Board member, Nicole Jagernauth, is taking on the 2026 NYC Marathon and she has a special message to share about why she is running for BRC. Read her message and join us in cheering her on! Every bit of support makes a difference. “As a New Yorker, I’ve seen firsthand how BRC shows up for our neighbors. From transitional housing & rehab programs to workforce development & permanent housing, BRC supports the most vulnerable members of our community. For the past 5 years, I’ve had the privilege of serving on BRC’s Junior Board — a group of young New Yorkers who raise awareness, fundraise, and volunteer to support BRC’s work. This year, I’m taking that commitment one step further by running the 2026 NYC Marathon in support of BRC! I recently hosted a Paint & Sip fundraiser for this cause and I’d be grateful if you’d consider making a donation of any amount to support BRC’s essential services and life-changing work. Thank you for your support!" - Nicole Jagernauth You can extend your support to Nicole here: https://lnkd.in/e6cQxV_d

  • Our Junior Board volunteered to create a fun and festive Halloween atmosphere at Sadiqua Khabir House. We thank the Junior Board for taking the time to bring the magic for our tenants this season. Sadiqua Khabir House is BRC’s 35-unit permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless adults living with mental illness, substance use disorders, and HIV/AIDS. • Last week, the New York Transit Museum hosted ‘Through the Mirror: Homelessness, Healthcare and Innovation in the NYC Subways,’ a public panel featuring Anand Giridharadas, author of the compelling new book ‘Man in the Mirror: Hope, Struggle, and Belonging in an American City.’ The book offers a closer look at homelessness in New York City and the people and systems working to address it. It also highlights BRC’s frontline outreach work and features our very own Lisette Lojo, Program Director of Transit Outreach, who was present at the event. BRC CEO and President Kelly Quirk and Chief Program Officer Lillian Contreras also attended, alongside other members of the BRC team. It was an evening of thought-provoking conversations, difficult realities and the enduring hope that defines New York City. Take a peek at some moments from the event!
