A fire at a Pacific Seafood aquaculture facility is prompting evacuation orders in an Oregon town as toxic smoke containing ammonia has made the air unsafe to breathe. Sadly, this is the kind of tragedy we can expect more of from industrial aquaculture as that system grows. We sued a different Pacific Seafood-owned facility in Oregon earlier this year for illegally discharging toxic chemicals like chlorine into the Columbia River. Industrial aquaculture pollutes our environment and our communities, and FarmSTAND will continue to hold these companies accountable. Center for Food Safety

Most of us assume (or hope) we can trust our grocery store - after all, how can we buy food from someone we don't trust? Our latest lawsuit alleges that Hannaford, a Northeastern grocery chain, is misleading consumers about the sustainability of its seafood. This is more than a technicality or creative marketing. We have a right to be told the truth about the food we're buying for ourselves and our families. As our food supply is increasingly controlled by a handful of faceless corporations, FarmSTAND will continue to hold bad actors accountable. Read more about our case against Hannaford, which we filed with our partner the Center For Food Safety, on our website. Center for Food Safety

Class of Consumers Sues Hannaford & Parent Company Over Deceptive Marketing of “Sustainable” Salmon The grocery store chain Hannaford aggressively markets its seafood as sustainable, when in reality it “sells industrially farmed salmon whose production inflicts grave harms on pristine marine ecosystems and has caused the destruction of marine life around the world,” according to a federal suit filed in New York late yesterday. The plaintiff is represented by fair food system advocacy organization FarmSTAND, the Center for Food Safety, Reese LLP, and Jennings & Earley PLLC. It takes some nerve to devastate the coastal ecosystems fishing communities depend on, and then compete with those same communities by calling your fish “sustainable.” That’s the advantage greenwashing gives companies like Cooke. And grocery stores help make it possible when they put that story on a sign above the seafood counter. Independent fishers shouldn’t have to compete with a marketing fiction. Proud of our team for taking this on alongside Center for Food Safety, Reese LLP, and Jennings & Earley PLLC.

Hannaford has been falsely claiming their seafood to be sustainable in its stores across the Northeast. In a new lawsuit filed late yesterday, we and our partners at the Center for Food Safety are holding them accountable. Hannaford knows that their customers value sustainability, so they aggressively market their seafood that way. In reality, they source their seafood from industrial aquaculture farms that are linked to the destruction of marine ecosystems. We should be able to trust that the food we buy in the grocery store matches what's being advertised. When companies falsely trade on sustainability, they mislead consumers, disadvantage actually sustainable producers, and let the abuses of the aquaculture industry slip under the radar. • “Eating is an agricultural act.” Few people changed the way we understand the relationship between food, land, and community as profoundly as Wendell Berry. For more than half a century, the writer and farmer challenged industrial agriculture and called us toward a food system rooted in care, culture, ecological responsibility, and respect for the people who cultivate the land. Center for Food Safety was honored to share a meaningful history with Wendell. In 2015, we presented him with the American Food & Farming Award at a special gathering on Capitol Hill. He also served alongside CFS leaders Andrew Kimbrell and Debi Barker on the International Commission on the Future of Food and Agriculture. We are deeply grateful for his wisdom, his courage, and the path he helped illuminate. May his work continue - in our fields, our communities, and the choices we make about food every day.
