The U.S. Department of Transportation is seeking input on an interesting concept for accelerating the construction of linear utility infrastructure, like electricity transmission, pipelines, and broadband. “America's Great Corridors of Commerce” proposes colocating utilities along existing transportation rights-of-way, including in shared tunnels, through public-private partnerships. We think the proposal has real promise, and have some suggestions that reflect our work with utilities and agencies across the country as they deal with the complexity of subsurface infrastructure. A few points that we shared, centering on the use of records-based utility maps to help with site selection and project delivery: • Know what's underground before you designate the corridor. Subsurface utility conflicts are one of the most common causes of delay, redesign, and cost overruns on linear infrastructure. • Use subsurface data to decide which corridors get selected for this effort. Right-of-way availability shouldn't be the only test. A baseline utilities map reveals a lot about actual complexity and cost. • Give bidders the data up front. When sponsors share baseline subsurface information before bidding, bids get more accurate, due diligence costs drop, and winning bidders are less likely to back out over surprises. Check out our full submission – and offer your input on the proposal by October 2! CivilGrid's submission: https://lnkd.in/gqMpNeyY

About us
CivilGrid is a construction intelligence platform combining layers of utility, environmental, and geotechnical site data. We aggregate and curate datasets that developers, engineers, and construction companies need to make critical planning and project implementation decisions. By partnering with local utilities and agencies, we gain access to the most current GIS datasets. These datasets help you accelerate project due diligence, reduce utility research and project engineering cost, and improve risk identification and construction planning.

Dig-ins are a common occurrence, with over a thousand happening every day in the US. Their effects range from costly headaches and delays, to shutting down five airports simultaneously. We treat it as a fact of life. But it doesn't have to be. That's why we built CivilGrid.
A construction crew in New Jersey took down five airports today. All they did was cut a cable. Newark, Philadelphia, JFK, LaGuardia, Teterboro. Hundreds of flights canceled because a Verizon fiber running the FAA's air traffic control got hit during a dig. They didn't know it was there. This is a dig-in. It happens about 500,000 times a year in the US. Most don't take down five airports. But all of them cost money, and some cost lives. The infrastructure record for that fiber existed somewhere. It just wasn't in the hands of the crew about to break ground. That's what we built CivilGrid for. So the people digging know what's underground before the shovel hits dirt. Today's story ends with delayed flights. Tomorrow's could end differently. This is one of the most preventable categories of infrastructure failure in this country. Brandon Cohen

CivilGrid is OUT here! Our very own Piera Molin organized a clean up crew in partnership with the South Carolina town of Fort Mill's Utilities Dept. Together, they cleared out nearby roadsides and creekbeds and gathered a whopping ONE HUNDRED and one POUNDS of trash! Let's hear it for civic duty in action!! 👏

We're so excited to share our new case study with Pacific Gas and Electric Company! PG&E has used CivilGrid to revolutionize their workflow, from a sequential process where each step needed to wait months for surveying and data collection to finish, to designing, planning, and surveying in parallel. As a result, they saved 3 to 4 months per project, with a 30% to 40% reduction in surveying costs. This is just one of the powerful advancements in our story with PG&E. What a wild three years it's been: from pitching CivilGrid to Pacific Gas and Electric Company at their Innovation Pitch Fest, to closing our $26M Series A with PG&E as a trusted partner. Check out this article about the journey on PG&E's blog, and get excited about what the next three years will bring! We're just getting started...
Three years ago I walked into Pacific Gas and Electric Company's Innovation Pitch Fest as a founder. For nearly a decade before that, I was a PG&E engineer, managing over $500M in infrastructure projects and living the exact problem CivilGrid was built to fix. Different side of the table this time. The company that trained me was surfacing hard problems and backing the people trying to solve them. PG&E just published a piece on how the partnership played out. Since deploying CivilGrid, they've cut field research and survey time by 40% and accelerated project scoping by up to four months. Over $60M in avoided paving and project cost. Getting to give back to PG&E's mission of safe and affordable service to Californians means a lot to me. Grateful to Fred Han for the story, and to Christine Cowsert Chapman, PE Sean Ness Ryan Pletka, PE Aimee Crawford Bryon Winget Brad Carr Austin Hastings William Lam Ramit Bajaj Andy Dashner Deeply proud of the CivilGrid team. $26M Series A. More to come. Dave Veilleux Sam O'Melveny

Check out our official press release for our $26M Series A announcement! This round of funding was led by Spark Capital. America is entering an unprecedented era of infrastructural investment, with over $3.7 trillion pouring in for major projects nationwide. Legacy data and antiquated systems aren't sufficient for preconstruction teams to make the most of this opportunity. That's why our CEO Josh Mackanic built CivilGrid: to empower plans to succeed in a new era of infrastructure construction, turning these trillions into the projects that improve the lives of Americans. Stay tuned for more exciting announcements as we evolve into the next phase of Team CivilGrid! https://lnkd.in/gqgxP3Ki Energy Impact Partners A* Afore Capital SNR Ford Street Ventures Burnt Island Ventures

Proud to be an investor in CivilGrid's $26M Series A. CivilGrid is building the construction intelligence platform for utilities and infrastructure, aggregating fragmented underground utility, environmental, and permitting data into a single geospatial view so project teams can plan smarter before breaking ground, with the potential to save utilities hundreds of millions annually. As the energy transition drives unprecedented infrastructure build-out, better pre-construction intelligence means faster, safer, and lower-cost deployment. Congratulations to Josh Mackanic and the CivilGrid team. https://lnkd.in/gk6_FNVd
