We had the honor of welcoming Robert Lindblom, grandson of Erik Lindblom, who purchased the hotel in 1918, along with his wife, Jean. Both Robert and Jean are over 100 years old and shared remarkable stories and memories from the hotel's rich history with our Managing Director, Edward Roe. Among the stories was a fascinating piece of Claremont history. While many believe the hotel's main entrance was moved from the original Carriage Entrance (now home to East Bay Provisions) because horses struggled with the climb, the real reason was tied to liquor licensing laws after Prohibition. Robert shared that two UC Berkeley students measured the distance from campus to the hotel. By moving the main entrance of the hotel to what is now the main entrance at Tunnel Road, the hotel exceeded the required one-mile distance from campus and was able to obtain a liquor license. As a thank you, the students were rewarded with free drinks for life. More than a century later, stories like these continue to bring The Claremont's history to life. Today, the FIFA World Cup 2026 flag was raised at Oakland City Hall as the Bay Area prepares to welcome the World Cup in just 30 days.
