  • Cornerstones was honored to host a special one-hour meeting with the Fairfax County Department of Health and Human Services, who brought two very special envoys from Senator Bernie Sanders’ office. Senator Sanders serves as the Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, overseeing key health, education, labor, and retirement policy issues. Their goal was to learn about negative effects and health outcomes as a result of food and housing insecurity. Read the full article on the Cornerstones blog, "Thrive." https://lnkd.in/eDJt7PVd

  • It takes a network of dedicated people, volunteers, and organizations to ensure no one in our community goes to bed hungry at night. The Cornerstones FREE from Hunger Center (Food Hub) has the capacity to function as a clearinghouse for perishable food donations. Our 10,000 square-foot food warehouse is equipped with large capacity freezers and refrigerators; three loading bays; equipment to facilitate food collection, rescue and distribution operations. We are happy to be able to work with folks like Luke Frazza fighting food insecurity in our region.

DATA showed once again that transportation is a food security issue. When the Stars & Stripes NOVA Committee had more than 125 lbs. of frozen Chicken and ground beef to donate to Cook For Vets, Inc. (CFV) from the Cornerstones warehouse, they asked DATA Mobility Partners to arrange transportation. DATA was happy to pick up the food in Sterling, Va and deliver it to CFV kitchen in Alexandria, Va. DATA has carved out a unique role in a variety of #foodinsecurity projects, bringing a transportation solution to an existing project that helps feed those in need. Examples include: • Recruiting volunteer drivers to help increase CFV food deliveries. • Recruiting corporate partners like Northwest Federal Credit Union employee volunteers to pick up prepared meals from D.C. Central Kitchen, and take them to the CFV distribution kitchen. • Picking up groceries from Soldiers' Angels' food distrubution events in Washington, D.C. and delivering them to veterans and servicemembers in #NorthernVirginia who don't have transportation, after an introduction by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The secret sauce for DATA's NOVA Food for All initiative is partnering with existing food insecurity projects that are facing transportation challenges, and bringing a transportation solution to increase each program's reach and effectiveness. Visit DATA's NOVA Food for All page to learn more, propose a partnership, volunteer, or make a donation. https://lnkd.in/eqP_ED4H Shannon Steene John Lee Jeff Bentley Caitlin Orth The Ruth and Hal Launders Charitable Trust The American Legion Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Virginia Department of Veterans Services Ryan Hinely Fairfax County Economic Development Authority Northern Virginia Regional Commission U.S. Army Garrison Fort Belvoir Dr. Christopher Pulley Fairfax County Government Volunteer Fairfax Volunteer Prince William Loudoun Cares George Washington Chapter AUSA AUSA Potomac - Liberty Chapter Gordon Sumner Ph.D. Gerald P. Last week, Cornerstones hosted a Food Security Forum, kicking off our Abundant Harvest Season campaign during Hunger Action Month. I had the honor of helping create this conversation from the ground up. I’m still thinking about what an impactful evening it was. The timing couldn’t have been more meaningful. The same day as our Forum, the Capital Area Food Bank released its annual Hunger Report, with two facts that really stood out: food insecurity is at a five-year high, with current estimates surpassing levels seen near the height of the pandemic. At the same time, new federal legislation is expected to reduce SNAP funding by approximately $187 billion over 10 years. The report makes clear that as fewer people are able to rely on SNAP, food pantries and other community food providers will increasingly be called upon as a first line of defense. Against that backdrop, our panel brought an important message of both urgency and hope. Our community has an abundance of resources — people, organizations, businesses, food providers and nonprofits — and together, we have the ability to make a significant impact on food security. The challenges are - how do we raise awareness and how do we bring those resources together and turn them into action. A very personal thank you to our wonderful panelists Kelly Andreae, Chris Holland, Ted Lewis, Paul Misener, and DT Oliver for sharing your expertise, experiences and ideas. You made the conversation informative, thought-provoking and, ultimately, hopeful. Thank you to Reston Community Center for hosting us and helping create such a welcoming space for this important conversation. And thank you to Board Chair Andrew Lacher and CEO Shannon Steene for your support and leadership. I’m also incredibly grateful to our Abundant Harvest Season Underwriters — Bob Van Hoecke, Marjie and Steve Alloy, Kate and Gary Buschelman, Paul Misener, and Connie and Craig Kendall — whose support is making this season possible, and to all of our Food Forum Security Forum sponsors who helped bring this conversation to our community. And then there was this feedback, which may be my favorite: “Thank you for telling me about last night's food security conversation. Truth be told, I thought it would be boring. Well, was I wrong. The discussion was informative, enlightening and even hopeful. Hopeful just thinking about what we can do together.” That’s exactly what we hoped for. ❤️ It was an impactful evening, and I’m grateful to everyone who helped make it happen — and to everyone who showed up ready to listen, learn and be part of the conversation. We’ll be sharing photos and a video from the Forum on Cornerstones’ channels soon, so stay tuned!

  • Thank You, Capital Bank, N.A.! A big thank you to Capital Bank for supporting local children through our weekend food program. Although only two volunteers were able to attend, they went above and beyond, staying past their scheduled volunteer shift to ensure all the work was completed. Thanks to their dedication, 270 weekend snack packs were assembled for children receiving free and reduced-price lunch across Fairfax and Loudoun Counties. Their commitment proves that a small team can make a big impact. Thank you, Capital Bank, for helping ensure local children have access to nutritious food over the weekend.
