We’re continuing our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration by honoring the home remedies and care traditions many grew up with. ❤️ As we grow, we navigate healthcare in new ways—we learn that caring for ourselves can include prevention, trusted guidance, and medical support when needed. What we are taught at home will always be part of how we care for ourselves and our families. When we need extra support, seeking medical care can be another way to protect that care. With Open Enrollment coming up, Covered California is here to help you understand your options and prepare for the care you and your family may need. #HispanicHeritageMonth #SaludQueSeHereda #CoveredCalifornia

Emergency departments should not become the default destination for health issues that could have been prevented or managed earlier, though we know this is already the case. In my latest op-ed, I explore a troubling trend: as more Californians enroll in Marketplace plans with higher out-of-pocket costs, preventive care is declining even though many preventive services are available for free. This matters. Fewer primary care visits and screenings leads to later diagnoses, worsening chronic conditions, and more people arriving at already-overwhelmed emergency departments, sicker, and where the care is more expensive. Healthcare leaders, insurers, and policymakers must make coverage easier to understand and use, with a focus on ensuring people use the care they're entitled to, regardless of the type of insurance plan they have. Renewal is your yearly opportunity to keep your health coverage, update your information, and shop for the plan that best fits your needs for next year. Even if nothing has changed, log in to review your account and watch for important notices and deadlines. While you may be automatically renewed if you don't take action, it's still a good idea to make sure your plan and financial help are still right for you.

A Bronze plan can be a smart option if you want quality health coverage with a lower monthly premium. Bronze plans cover essential health benefits, including doctor visits, hospital care, preventive services, and prescriptions. While you may pay more out of pocket when you need care, your monthly premium is often lower than other plan levels. It’s a good fit for people who want dependable coverage and protection from major medical costs while keeping monthly payments more affordable. Learn more at CoveredCA.com

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re introducing Salud que se hereda, a series that celebrates the care passed down from generation to generation, and how that care continues to grow through the ways we protect our health today. Over the next few weeks, follow along as we honor the health, family, and care we carry with us.

I thought I'd had all my childhood vaccines...until my medical school titers proved otherwise. 🫨 Today my family makes flu shots a family affair, turning a trip to the pharmacy into an annual family outing. But growing up, we were one of those families who would have been labeled "non-complaint" or "non-adherent". Those labels are reductive and risk scapegoating. Parents need clear information, trustworthy messengers, and space to ask questions without judgment.
