A Message from the Administrator:
On September 11th, twenty-five years ago, when our Nation was attacked and thousands were trapped in Lower Manhattan, the Coast Guard issued a call across New York Harbor for “all available boats” to assist in the evacuation.
And merchant mariners delivered.
Through smoke, falling debris, limited visibility, and unimaginable uncertainty, civilian mariners maneuvered their vessels with unwavering resolve toward the danger. In just nine hours, they carried nearly half a million traumatized people to safety in what we know now was the largest sea evacuation in world history.
U.S. Merchant Mariners delivered hope.
They delivered courage.
They delivered the best of America.
In the twenty-five years since that day, U.S. Merchant Mariners have carried forward that same spirit of duty, serving our Nation "In Peace and War," supporting military operations around the globe, delivering critical cargo to our troops, and standing watch wherever our Nation needs them most.
They have answered the call in humanitarian missions, hurricane response, and disaster relief, bringing help to communities in their darkest hours. And every day, they serve aboard military and commercial vessels, sustaining the flow of commerce that strengthens our economy and safeguards our national security.
And their legacy endures.
Today, many sons and daughters of those mariners — inspired by the courage shown that day — have stepped up to serve as the next generation of America's mariners, with the same willingness to help those in need, the same devotion to duty, and the same professionalism. Their service stands as a living testament to the example set on 9/11 and to the enduring strength of our maritime community.
As the U.S. Maritime Administrator, I remember and honor the victims of the attacks, the first responders who gave their lives in the effort to save them, and all those who answered the call on 9/11 — including the brave merchant mariners who continue to serve today.
We will never forget what you delivered for our Nation.
Thank you.
