Updates

  • Ecma International approves NLIP standards suite for universal AI agent communication. These specifications establish an open, secure foundation for AI agents to communicate across organizational boundaries and technology platforms, replacing hard-coded application programming interfaces with a universal envelope protocol. NLIP enables multi-turn conversational exchanges between humans and AI agents, as well as agent-to-agent interaction, regardless of their organizational domains or internal technologies. This approach eliminates many challenges associated with API management in current software systems and enables the development of universal client applications that can communicate with any NLIP-enabled agent. These standards enable transformative new applications: universal mobile apps that work across banking, healthcare, transit, and government services; enterprise agents that federate across departments and organizations; and seamless integration between legacy systems and modern AI capabilities. ECMA-430, ECMA-431, ECMA-432, ECMA-433, ECMA-434, and ECMA TR/113 were developed by Ecma Technical Committee 56 and are available free of charge from the Ecma International website. • The 130th General Assembly held in Geneva on 10 December 2025 approved a new Ecma recognition award to honour Luoming Zhang for his contributions and services to Ecma. Luoming Zhang served as the Ecma Treasurer and a member of the ExeCom from 2022 to 2025. He has also been an active participant in TC31, TC38 and TC51. He was instrumental in initiating the agreement with ITMA and the new iTAP work item in TC51.

  • TC56 on Natural Language Interaction Protocol (NLIP) for communication with AI agents calls for participation and comments on revised NLIP specification and new WebSocket binding. Ecma TC56 is pleased to announce two major milestones in the development of the Natural Language Interaction Protocol (NLIP). These updates mark significant progress in establishing a secure, interoperable, and multimodal communication standard for AI agents and human-agent interaction.
