It’s all in the details. The quality of a space is often defined by the moments you have to get close to appreciate. From carefully matched wood grain and custom millwork to precise reveals and material transitions, we consider every detail as an opportunity for thoughtful execution. These details begin with a distinct design vision, brought to life through meticulous coordination and exceptional craftsmanship alongside our architect partners, clients, and trade partners. Our role is to understand the intent behind every element, help carry that vision forward in alignment with the project’s priorities, and translate it into the built environment with precision. And when every detail is in place? The space feels effortless, even though the work behind it is anything but.

San Francisco’s AI boom is reshaping more than technology, it’s reshaping the workplace. GCI is underway on a new office build for a multi-billion-dollar AI firm in Downtown San Francisco, creating a space designed to support a growing team and the way they work. With sweeping views of the city and bay, private offices, glass-front meeting spaces, and plenty of room to grow, we’re excited to see this project come together!

Over the last five years, we have partnered with one of our repeat clients in the South Bay to build out both 3172 and 3174 Porter Drive. This past Thursday, we were proud to continue that relationship by celebrating the ribbon cutting of another neighboring Research Park building. 3176 Porter Drive spans 43,000 square feet, bringing together wet labs, offices, and community spaces designed to support a wide range of research programs. The two-story renovation included extensive interior demolition while preserving key portions of the building’s existing infrastructure. Labs and offices were strategically positioned along the perimeter to maximize natural light, while a new central staircase connects shared spaces at the heart of the facility, creating more opportunities for collaboration across floors. We’re proud to celebrate this milestone alongside Stanford and our partners at Perkins&Will. Remarks from Dean Lloyd Minor, Bart Sapeta, and Dr. Ruth O’Hara marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for research at 3176 Porter Drive. Immensely proud to have helped bring this exceptional San Francisco office to life. In addition to the outstanding partners recognized by GCI General Contractors below, including Gardiner & Theobald LLP, Gensler, MEYERS+ ENGINEERS, and GCI General Contractors, I also want to recognize our furniture partners, Olivia Gorfain and Melissa Rokes of KBM Hogue, lighting consultant Tobias Holden of Banks Landl Lighting Design, art consultant Laura Grigsby, and our incredible clients, Allan Wildstein and Kelly Kaiser Clingman. A dream project with a truly exceptional team.
Imagine walking into work each day and being greeted with 360-degree views of the city. Whether heavy fog is rolling over the hills or the sky is crystal clear, this Am Law 100 firm's new office is truly immersed in downtown San Francisco. On one side, the team overlooks the bustling Ferry Building and the serene scene of boats passing beneath the Bay Bridge. On the other, the office feels deeply rooted in the urban core – framed by soaring skyscrapers and iconic landmarks like Coit Tower in the distance. It was a pleasure to partner with this client and Gensler to build out two full floors, including an expansive lobby, new private offices, conference and meeting rooms, break rooms, IDF/server rooms, and more. We loved collaborating with our trade partners to bring this refined vision to life — layering in high-end woodwork, elevated tile finishes, and thoughtful detailing throughout to create a space that feels both polished and distinctly San Francisco. We’re proud to recognize GCI Safety Manager Cesar Carrillo on becoming an OSHA-authorized Construction Outreach trainer. After completing both the OSHA #510 Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry course and the OSHA #500 Trainer Course, Cesar is now authorized to lead OSHA 10-Hour and 30-Hour Construction Outreach Training and issue official OSHA course completion cards. This means he can provide OSHA-authorized training directly to our teams, helping make critical safety education more accessible across GCI. This achievement reflects Cesar’s continued commitment to strengthening GCI’s safety culture through practical education, shared knowledge, and empowered teams. We’re excited to see him bring this expertise directly to our people and continue raising the standard for safety across our jobsites.

We’re proud to have partnered with Save the Redwoods League for the second time to build out their San Francisco headquarters. Working alongside TEF ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN, INC, GCI completed a refresh of a 10,400-square-foot space with a thoughtful balance of reuse and new elements. Existing office walls were repurposed, while the boardroom and breakroom layouts were retained. New components included a gender neutral restroom, conference rooms, private offices, and an open office environment. For more than a century, Save the Redwoods League has been dedicated to protecting and restoring California’s redwood forests, making environmental responsibility a natural priority for the project. By incorporating low-embodied-carbon materials and maximizing the reuse of existing elements, the team created a workplace that aligns with Save the Redwoods League’s mission and values. We’re grateful for the opportunity to continue our partnership with Save the Redwoods League! How do you keep a busy downtown San Francisco building active while construction is underway? At 300 California, our team created a custom partition to separate the work area from a high-traffic occupied space. Then, we partnered with a local artist to transform the space with the building's branding and graphics, so that walking in becomes an experience tenants could truly enjoy. Lastly, we made sure to hang renderings showing their soon-to-be, high-end lobby and Andytown Cafe. The result? No noise, no dust, people stopping on the sidewalk to peer in, and excitement for the space they will get to enjoy in the coming months. It’s one example of how we aim to create thoughtful solutions to keep the client experience front and center. Muralist: Ondrea Vicklund

Another South Bay project successfully closed out! These jurisdictions require proactive communication, organized documentation, and close attention to detail, particularly ones involving specific confined-space protocols and bridge crane operation to transport materials deep underground. Our team recently completed work at The Deep Lab, a specialized research environment with a unique history. The base building originally built in 1971 to house a linear accelerator, the facility sits 50 feet below grade, with 6-foot-thick concrete walls and ceilings. Transforming a space with that much history and complexity required careful coordination, technical execution, and a strong understanding of the local permitting and closeout process. We’re proud of the team’s work in helping move this project through closeout efficiently. The final beam of roof steel supporting the three-floor addition at The Spear is officially in place! To commemorate the milestone, we brought our clients and trade partners together for a Topping Out Celebration. Amidst pizza and good company, everyone had the chance to sign the final beam before the crane operator lifted it to the roof, marking a meaningful moment in the project’s history and recognizing the many hands that made it possible!
