From Indianapolis to Alaska! 🩵 Senior Marine Mammal Trainer Erika A. recently had the opportunity to travel to the Alaska SeaLife Center to help care for an orphaned walrus calf. As part of the rehabilitation team, Erika is helping provide round-the-clock care this young walrus needs while he grows stronger and continues to learn and adapt. We're proud to see our team members share their expertise beyond the Zoo and contribute to the care of animals in need. 🌎 🌿 Alaska SeaLife Center #indianapoliszoo #indianapolis #walrus #wildlifeconservation

About us
Opened in 1964, the Indianapolis Zoo is the largest privately funded zoo in the nation. Located near downtown in White River State Park since 1988, the Zoo hosts more than a million visitors annually. The Zoo has also emerged as a global leader in animal conservation and research, receiving international recognition for work with conservation and breeding programs including the world’s first successful artificial insemination of an African elephant. Funding from the Indianapolis Zoo also supports the efforts of animal conservation organizations around the globe. At the Zoo, guests can connect year-round with nearly 1,300 animals within living habitats that closely resemble their native regions of the globe. The beautiful 3.3-acre White River Gardens is also part of the Zoo and continues its tradition of connecting animals, plants and people.

We wanted to share an update with our community: the Indianapolis Zoo was not granted AZA accreditation for this application cycle. While this is not the outcome we hoped for, we’re moving forward. AZA recognized many positive steps underway across the organization and their feedback gives us a clear path forward. We’ll partner with AZA through its Pathways to Membership program as we continue making meaningful improvements across the Zoo. This decision does not impact Zoo hours or daily operations. We remain committed to providing exceptional animal care and a world-class guest experience. We’re proud of the progress we’ve made and look forward to continuing this work together.

Indianapolis Zoo reposted this
Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of hosting a fireside chat with Dr. Jeff Proudfoot, the Indianapolis Zoo's Vice President of Veterinary Services, as part of our Indianapolis Prize Cocktails and Conservation series. Dr. Jeff is not only a brilliant leader in animal care and wildlife health, he's also one of the most engaging people you'll ever talk to. We covered everything from what inspired him to become a veterinarian to the Zoo's veterinary responsibilities and our partnership with The Nature Conservancy in Indiana and the bison herd at Kankakee Sands, one of the state's most inspiring conservation collaborations. And of course, we found time to compare notes on John Wayne Westerns, Dr. Jeff's favorite is "The Alamo," while mine continues to be "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." The Zoo is fortunate to have such an accomplished veterinary team whose impact extends far beyond our campus. It was fun to share their work with our community in such a lively, conversational setting.

This month, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of incoming Indiana University Indianapolis freshmen studying sports management, tourism, events and hospitality to the Indianapolis Zoo. EVP & COO John Gullion and Director of Brand Strategy Rachel Greene shared their career journeys and how their experiences ultimately led them to the Indianapolis Zoo. Discussions included the many ways their fields of study intersect with careers they may not immediately expect, from operations and guest experience to marketing, events and brand strategy. Most importantly, we encouraged them to stay curious, keep an open mind and say “yes" to opportunities along the way. It was a fun afternoon with an incredibly engaged group of students. We’re excited to see where their paths take them!

Recently, Katy Gwiazdon, IUCN Regional Councilor, North America and the Caribbean and Executive Director, Center for Environmental Ethics and Law, visited the Indianapolis Zoo and the Global Center for Species Survival. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), "works to advance sustainable development and create a just world that values and conserves nature,” according to the IUCN website. During her trip to the Indianapolis Zoo, she met with Senior Vice President of External Relations Jake Oakman and coordinators in the Global Center for Species Survival to offer her support and learn more about the Zoo's many conservation initiatives. She was impressed with the work the Zoo has done and is excited for the future. The Indianapolis Zoo is looking forward to future collaborations with Kathryn and applauds her incredible work around the globe.
