We are sorry to share that Igor Ryjenkov MW passed away on 21 July. Born in Russia and originally trained as a journalist, Igor discovered his passion for wine after visiting a Niagara Peninsula winery in 1995. Four years later he entered the Master of Wine programme, earning the prestigious MW title in 2003, having been awarded two North American Scholarships and the Henkell-Söhnlein Award for Best Dissertation. Following more than two decades with the LCBO, where he rose to oversee its European Wine Portfolio, Igor joined Opimian Club in 2022 as an MW tasting panel member and also offered consulting services to importers and producers wishing to enter the Ontario market. Last month, 27 MWs embarked on a nine-day study trip to Sicily, organised by Pietro Russo MW with assistance from Rose Murray Brown MW. The programme explored the island’s landscapes, terroirs and contemporary Mediterranean wines through masterclasses, vineyard visits, walkaround tastings, exploring red and white Etna wines from the slopes of the volcano, historic terraced vineyards, the Lake of Venus, and memorable hospitality. #mastersofwine
