Michigan has secured $145 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation to advance three critical passenger rail projects along the Michigan Line, a key corridor connecting communities across the state with Chicago and the broader Midwest. The impact goes beyond the tracks. Strong passenger rail infrastructure connects Michiganders to jobs, education and opportunity, supports tourism and strengthens Michigan’s connections to the broader Midwest economy. Submitted by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the investment will help reconstruct structurally deficient bridges, replace the 124-year-old Blackman Road Bridge in Jackson and improve tracks and turnouts between Dearborn and Kalamazoo. These improvements will strengthen reliability, help reduce travel times and service disruptions and make it easier for Michiganders and visitors to travel for work, school, tourism and other opportunities.

Michigan has the opportunity to lead in an emerging clean energy industry and we’re investing now to understand its potential. The Michigan Infrastructure Office is investing $7.5 million through the Make It in Michigan Competitiveness Fund to advance the exploration, research and development of geologic hydrogen. Michigan’s unique geology makes it one of the most promising regions for this naturally occurring resource. This investment will support research and development, mapping and subsurface characterization and test wells to determine whether geologic hydrogen can be safely and economically recovered. The potential impact is significant: lower energy costs, good-paying jobs, new investment and a cleaner energy source that could support Michigan’s industrial economy. It’s also an example of how strategic state investment can unlock even greater opportunity. The Make It in Michigan Competitiveness Fund has now invested $200.5 million to leverage $1.025 billion in federal funding. By investing in this kind of research today, we can better understand how this emerging resource could strengthen our energy independence, economic competitiveness and clean energy future.
