#ICYMI: Grant Johnsey, Head of Market Solutions, Americas for Northern Trust Asset Servicing, was recently featured by Japan's national broadcaster NHK, sharing insights on the Japanese yen's depreciation and its implications for global markets. Key points from the interview include: - Grant expects the yen to gradually strengthen over time, supported by government policy including a temporary reduction in food sales taxes to encourage consumption. - Japan’s central bank can also boost demand for Japanese stocks and bonds by raising its base lending rate (done Sept 18), which should help strengthen the currency. - Japan is making progress managing fiscal deficits and balancing its budget, and its historically high debt-to-GDP ratio is expected to continue falling. - Risks to current/recent yen strengthening include policy shifts to combat inflation, which could influence the currency exchange rate. The yen remains one of the most closely watched currencies in global markets, with implications that extend well beyond Japan. We'll be watching what comes next.
