  • PLG vs. SLG? ❌ PLG + SLG ✅ The data from 2025 is showing that loud and clear. The fastest-growing companies aren’t choosing one or the other. They’re running both on the same infrastructure. We're calling it hybrid-led growth.   We partnered with our friends at PricingSaaS to analyze 498 SaaS companies and 3,847 pricing changes across the year.   Let's call out a few numbers: -Freemium split in two. Half of companies tightened or killed free tiers. The other half doubled down. The ones in the middle made the least deliberate bets. -Credit model adoption grew 126% YoY. Credits are now the primary expansion trigger, replacing tier upgrades and outbound sales calls. -Trial reductions outnumbered extensions 3:1. The median SaaS trial is moving from 30 days toward 14. AI-native tools are already at 7. -242 AI feature events in Q4 2025 alone.     There are RevOps leaders who think AI will “automate RevOps” and fix broken revenue systems on its own. Jonathan M K. sees it differently. He believes AI gets you 99% of the way there, but humans are the final 1% that makes the difference. That last degree is what "turns warm water into boiling water", and that's where the value lives. Jonathan, VP of GTM Strategy at Momentum.io and founder of GTM AI Academy, was early on the AI bandwagon. His perspective comes from deploying tools across sales, enablement, and RevOps teams for more than three years. On The Lift podcast, he broke down what that 1% looks like inside a revenue org. AI can analyze pricing models, quickly summarize customer conversations, and prep your reps for complex negotiations. The output is impressive, but AI won’t, on its own, architect the end-to-end system that connects your tech stack, data flows, and team's execution into something that scales. Jonathan points to recent research by the major consulting firms: the bottleneck isn’t the tech; it’s org design, systems thinking, and change management.     For years we’ve treated PLG and SLG like a tradeoff. ✅ Pick a lane. ✅ Declare a motion. ✅ Build the org around it. But in AI, that framing breaks down fast. Because customers don’t behave in clean motions. They start self-serve. Hit a limit. Loop in procurement. Ask for security. Expand into another team. Then spin something new up on a card again. It’s messy. And where things tend to unravel isn’t in the motion itself, it’s in the assumption that customers will stay in one. That’s where monetization friction creeps in: - Cancel-and-replace contracts when someone “goes enterprise.” - Re-contracting every time usage changes. - Billing systems that simply can’t support hybrid motions. The companies handling this well aren’t arguing about PLG vs. SLG. Instead, they’re designing one commercial model that supports both. Credits + committed spend. Services folded into expansion. Contracts that evolve instead of reset. Systems that match the commercial story. I’ve loved diving deeper on this recently with our partner Nue.io. They’re building the infrastructure layer behind hybrid monetization - CPQ, billing, finance alignment - the unglamorous nuts and bolts that determine whether your “PLG + SLG strategy” works in practice. They live and breathe this stuff.
