A garden is never only the soil. Cultivating Community Connections to SNAP and Local Food: linking community gardens and Community Supported Agriculture programs (CSAs) to the benefits that help put that harvest on the table. At Francisco “Pancho” Ramos Community Garden on East Ninth Street, Shawn Garcia of Sixth Street Community Center tends more than beds and blooms. Neighbors grow food. They gather. They learn horticulture. They find a place that holds the emotional and spiritual work of community, and a harvest that can move from the plot to the table. Pancho’s Garden is where local food becomes local connection. SNAP and neighborhood CSAs help close the last mile so that what is grown locally can actually feed the people who live here. Food justice is access, dignity, and community. This series starts with the people who make it real. A place to grow. A place to gather. A path from harvest to the table. DSS First Deputy Commissioner Saratu Grace Ghartey celebrates a major investment in New York City’s pets and the families who love them. The FY2027 Budget includes $1.5 million for spay and neuter services and pet food pantry programs. The investment expands access to free or low-cost spay and neuter services and, for the first time, provides dedicated funding for pet food pantries. By funding pet food at 22 Community Food Connection pantries, vulnerable New Yorkers can get help caring for their beloved animals without having to make impossible choices. This investment reflects a commitment to strengthening the safety net for New Yorkers and their pets and the power of partnership between the Administration and City Council. #NYCDSSCares Helen Arteaga PhD Erin Dalton NYC Office of the Mayor
