The New York Climate Exchange

During #ClimateWeekNYC, The Exchange partnered with Waterfront Alliance and HNTB to bring together policymakers, practitioners, researchers, and community leaders for a collaborative workshop focused on New York's #resilience priorities.   From #housing and infrastructure to #heat, #flooding, mobility, and governance, participants worked across sectors to identify practical solutions and the partnerships needed to make a real impact.   Special thanks to keynote speaker Amanda Lefton, Commissioner of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, moderator Angela Licata (NYC Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP)), and panelists Ahmed Tigani (NYC Department of Buildings), Alexis Taylor (New York City Economic Development Corporation), Marit Larson (NYC Department of Parks & Recreation), and Tiffany-Ann Taylor (New York City Department of Transportation), and everyone else who joined us on #GovernorsIsland for a morning of collaboration, creativity, and action.

We are thrilled to welcome Julius Court as Managing Director of The Exchange!   Throughout his career, Julius has brought together researchers, policymakers, businesses, and communities to tackle some of the world's most complex challenges. From senior leadership roles at Conservation International to a distinguished career with the British Government, he has consistently focused on creating partnerships that drive lasting impact.    Julius joins The Exchange at a pivotal moment as we work alongside 48 partners to accelerate #climatesolutions and build a first-of-its-kind climate campus on #GovernorsIsland. As Julius recently shared,"collaboration is our superpower" and that spirit is at the heart of The Exchange. We are excited for the leadership and vision he brings as we continue advancing solutions across #finance, #urbanresilience, and #climatedata.

Most of the year, we invite people to Governors Island to learn and share. During #ClimateWeekNYC, dozens of partners join in across the city. Here's why Duke University's Jackson Ewing says it’s “quite the opposite of being trapped in a stuffy conference.”

What a week! The Exchange teamed up with a record 42 partners to co-host 19 events and welcome 1,400+ participants during #ClimateWeekNYC! From Governors Island to Pratt Institute and Solar One to The City University of New York, The Exchange and its partners turned up in full force ready to connect and collaborate. A few highlights include: 🤝 An inaugural Governors Dialogue on Governors Island in partnership with Under2 Coalition explored how states and regions can continue to lead on implementation, investment and economic transformation while strengthening collaboration across borders. 💪 Two sessions on #data and resilience. "When the Data Goes Dark" and "Activating Data Across Urban Environments" focused on streamlining data collection and accessibility to shape smarter, more resilient cities. 👋 Introducing our new cohort of #ClimateTech Fellows who are commercializing climate solutions related to energy (stay tuned for an announcement this week)! THIS is what we mean when we talk about bringing leaders together, exchanging knowledge, and scaling solutions! There's a time for conversation AND for getting outside — seeing solutions in action. Who wants to see more of this during #ClimateWeekNYC next year? 🙋

Governors & mayors around the world set important goals and ambition for #livablecities as #climatechange accelerates and there are people working really hard behind the scenes to do the difficult work of getting it done. How do we finance solutions we know work, how do we ensure affordability, how do we center equity? This was a focus for The New York Climate Exchange on Governors Island this #ClimateWeekNYC. Together with Climate Group’s Under 2 Coalition we brought state leaders around the table at Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) Arts Center, including Commissioner Amanda Lefton, to share areas of challenge & opportunities for regional collaboration. Thank you Champa Patel & Nehmat Kaur for your partnership! Over the next 2 days, together with incredible partners including Delivery Associates, climate, housing & finance leaders from 12 cities around the US tackled advancing energy efficient housing solutions. This was an inspiring group of dedicated public servants with so much to share with one another & I learned so much from all of them. We also visited the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation, learned at Newlab & heard from innovators like David Hammer from Popwheels & experts working on New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) solutions at scale at the new apartment of the future education center including Siobhan Watson, Vlada Kenniff, PhD, DBIA & Alex Zablocki. Thank you Ethan Mulligan & Nina SalvatoreNina Salvatore! Also thanks to Exchange partners In Cho, Jessica Bacher, Josh Rice & Jackson Ewing, PhD for the expertise you brought to this work. On the local front, together with Waterfront Alliance & HNTB, #NYC city agency leaders came to the table with specific challenges. Experts from different sectors & geographies workshopped solutions, & presented to a jury who responded to ensure proposals were grounded. Thanks to Ahmed Tigani, Angela Licata, Tiffany-Ann Taylor, Alexis Taylor, Marit Larson for your leadership and to all the participants for your knowledge, lived experience and ideas. Thanks especially to Julie Raskin, Furhana Husani, WEDG, David Ezer, CMP, Hope Kaufman, WEDG, & Leah Wener, RLA for bringing this collaboration to Governors Island! My takeaways? ➡️ This work is ever more complex & the easy things have already been done. One sector or even one agency like a sustainability office can’t do it all and we need increased collaboration. ➡️ New, creative finance solutions are necessary. Old models aren’t working for the complex challenges we face. Let’s build them together. ➡️ People working in local government doing this work are heroes. Let’s do more to support their work. Where cities are able to deliver and implement solutions, we all succeed. ➡️ Climate Week is every week at The New York Climate Exchange and we are going to take these insights & the needs surfaced to inform our programming together with our partners. Workshopping solutions on Governors Island opens possibilities for the future we want to see!
