Thousands upon thousands of microplastic fibers are caught in the lint traps of dryers every time we do laundry. Unfortunately, most washing machines don’t have that kind of filter … and the risk this poses to our ocean is far greater than you might think. Millions of microfibers can be released into our wastewater via our washing machines, eventually ending up in our ocean, rivers, land and farm fields. Simply put, these microfibers are #NotSafeForWash! Microfibers might be incredibly small, but they’re a massive problem for our blue planet. The good news: The solution already exists! Washing machine filters on the market today can capture 90% of microfibers in the wash. The chasing arrows symbol has been slapped on plastic since the 1970s regardless of whether the material can actually be recycled. ♻️ This is not an accident. It's a choice that has cost recycling workers countless hours pulling contaminants off the line while driving up recycling costs for the rest of us. Rather than fixing the root of the problem, the PACK Act wants to hand over the job of deciding what's "recyclable" to third-party certifiers, including ones set up by the same industry that created this confusion in the first place. There's a simple solution: Prohibit the use of the chasing arrows symbol on anything that isn't actually recyclable. Better yet: Stop making non-recyclable plastics.
