From the tiniest anchovy to the largest sharks, a damselfish on a tropical coral reef to icefish living in the freezing waters off of Antarctica, fish can be found in nearly every corner of our ocean. Fish are key players in ocean ecosystems, and they’re incredibly important for people and economies around the world. Fisheries put seafood on the table for billions of people and offer jobs and livelihoods for millions. Many folks fish for fun or as a way to connect to our ocean, and subsistence fishing is a key component of food security and culture. Fishing traditions stretch back to time immemorial, and fishing is deeply interwoven into culture and history. As Ocean Conservancy marks National Seafood Month this October, we’re more committed than ever to fighting for sustainable fisheries around the United States. Throughout the month, we’ll share ways for you to learn more and get involved and take action. Because without sustainable fisheries, there is simply no seafood. https://bit.ly/4AKSE9d #NationalSeafoodMonth

Ocean Conservancy reposted this
Last Saturday I got to dive back into my “side gig within my real gig” and photograph yet another Ocean Conservancy cleanup event! Often times in the conservation/policy space, you don’t see the fruits of your labor for a long time… if ever. Whether it’s meeting with congressional offices to defend short sighted and (probably) illegal attacks on Clean Air Act Vessel Waivers, advocating for the Plug Offshore Wells Act, or networking at New York Climate Week— you’re playing the long game. That’s why events like OC’s International Coastal Cleanup are so fun, impactful, (and cathartic). Over the span of just a few hours, friends, colleagues, and over 400 volunteers picked up over 2000 lbs of trash from Anacostia Park, right here in Washington DC!

Our ocean is a mysterious place, and nowhere is that more evident than the deepest marine area in the world: the legendary Mariana Trench. About 7,000 feet deeper than Mount Everest is tall, the trench lies at depths 3 times deeper than the Titanic's final resting place. Challenger Deep, the deepest part of the trench, is almost 36,000 feet below the ocean’s surface. But how much do we really know about the Mariana Trench? What kind of life can be sustained at such extreme depth and pressure ... and what don't we know about this elusive part of our ocean? Hop in a virtual submersible and get ready to have your biggest questions about the Mariana Trench and Challenger Deep answered: https://bit.ly/4iU0y9W

Introducing our newest Protect Where We Play Team Ocean Captain: Hans Henken! ⛵️ Hailing from San Clemente, California, Hans is an Olympic medalist and professional sailor. He began sailing at six years old and has since established himself as one of the most talented and innovative sailors of his generation. Today, Hans competes with the US SailGP Team in the Rolex SailGP Championship and American Racing Challenger Team USA in the America’s Cup. He draws on his sailing and engineering backgrounds while racing some of the fastest foiling boats in the world, where technology, athleticism and the ocean converge at extraordinary speeds. After more than two decades spent on the water, Hans has developed a deep connection to the ocean and the places it has taken him. The ocean is not simply where he competes—it is where he works, explores and spends much of his life. That connection has made ocean conservation a natural extension of his life as a sailor and is what drives his commitment to protecting the places where he plays. 🌎 Welcome to #TeamOcean, Hans! 🌊⛵️🌊

Help advocate for safer, cleaner shipping this #WorldMaritimeDay! 🚢 No matter where we live across the country, most of us rely on global shipping for everyday products. And while shipping plays a large role in the U.S. economy, it also plays a large role in exacerbating climate change. Right now, lawmakers want to roll back two California Clean Air Act waivers that protect our ocean and port communities around the country from toxic shipping fumes. We’re calling on the Senate to say NO to these rollbacks. The numbers show just what’s at stake. Recent updates to the rules are projected to: 🚢 Cut cancer risk near major ports by 55%+ 🚢 Reduce cancer-causing pollution by 89% 🚢 Save $7+ billion in health care costs Take action TODAY. We still have time to defend these lifesaving protections, but we need to ask fast. Add your name and tell your senators to defend our ocean and our air: https://lnkd.in/gd7ch5xQ

It's no surprise that shipping is central to the global economy. Ships carry more than 80% of goods traded worldwide by volume, and connect production, consumption, food systems, energy supply chains and industrial activities across regions. But global shipping also drives significant greenhouse gas emissions and exacerbates the climate crisis. In order for countries to fully decarbonize their economies, they must proactively address shipping and ports in their climate policies, plans and commitments. That's where Ocean Conservancy's new tool comes in. Our “Integrating Shipping Into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs): A Guidance Tool for Decarbonization” helps governments turn shipping decarbonization into concrete national action with targets, policies, investment pathways and accountability to reach the net-zero framework outlined in the Paris Agreement. ⚓ Dive in for World Maritime Day and learn more about shipping pollution, the impacts on port communities and beyond and the importance of integrating shipping emissions in NDCs to mitigate climate change: https://bit.ly/4d5f62J #WorldMaritimeDay
