Research found that people with alcohol, drug, and tobacco use disorders had 11.2 times the adjusted odds of suicide death compared to those without a substance use disorder. Millions of people with substance use needs never receive specialized care. When substance use and suicide prevention are treated as separate issues, opportunities to identify and support people at risk can be missed. As we close out this Suicide Prevention Month, we’re calling attention to the need for a more connected approach, one where substance use care is recognized as an important part of the broader suicide prevention strategy.
