We fund research and efforts to improve honey bee health and vitality.

About us

Project Apis m.'s mission is to fund research and efforts to improve honey bee health and vitality. Our name comes from Apis mellifera, the scientific name for the honey bee. Project Apis m. (PAm) is the go-to organization at the interface of research, honey bees, and agriculture. Since 2006, we have infused over $10 million into honey bee research and $2.9 million into forage programs, resulting in science-driven resources for bees and beekeepers. We work closely with commercial beekeepers, growers, and scientists in the USA and Canada to identify challenges as they arise. We then fund projects and direct strategic efforts focused on practical questions. PAm offers graduate scholarships to develop the next generation of bee scientists and has expanding efforts to put forage on the landscape where bees need it most. We are a 501(c)5 nonprofit organization governed by a Board of commercial beekeepers and other agricultural stakeholders. A volunteer Science Advisory Committee of well-established honey bee research scientists helps guide our selection of rigorous, applied projects. We are proud to be collaborative, practical, accountable, efficient, and flexible. Learn more about us at www.ProjectApism.org

  • Honey bee health matters far beyond the hive. A new story from KIRO 7 News in Seattle highlights the continued challenges facing beekeepers and the potential ripple effects for agriculture, food production, and consumers. Preliminary results from the 2025–2026 U.S. Beekeeping Survey show that beekeepers lost an estimated 39.9% of their managed honey bee colonies over the past year. While losses were lower than the previous two years, they remain a significant challenge for beekeeping operations across the country. As Project Apis m. Executive Director Danielle Downey explains, these losses can have consequences throughout the agricultural system. When there aren’t enough healthy colonies available for pollination, growers may face challenges securing the bees they need, and that can ultimately affect crop production and costs. I'm excited to share that I've started a new job as Development Director for Project Apis m. and the Bee Health Collective! This feels like the perfect next chapter. After nearly a decade working with honey bees across commercial and research settings, I spent the last few years in science philanthropy. Now I get to bring both of these worlds together in one role. I'm so grateful to everyone who supported me along the way, and I'm looking forward to what's next. 🐝
