Quit works to reduce the health, financial & social inequities caused by smoking. Call Quitline 13 7848 for help to quit

About us

Quit’s goal is to reduce the health, financial and social inequities caused by smoking and vaping. We use evidence to drive policy, system and behavioural changes that enable a healthier society, free from addiction to nicotine. We work with all levels of Government, providing evidence-based advice to inform the development and implementation of public health policy and programs. We empower health care providers to support their patients and clients with best practice smoking cessation care. And we work to advocate and support health, community and social service organisations to embed smoking cessation in routine care. Our public education campaigns educate and motivate to prevent teens from taking up smoking, and encourage those who smoke to quit and stay quit. We support people to stop smoking through our world-first telephone counselling service Quitline (13 7848) and online tools. For more information visit quit.org.au. Quit is a partnership between VicHealth, the State Government of Victoria and Cancer Council Victoria.

As alternative tobacco products continue to be used in social settings, access to evidence-based information is essential. To support informed conversations, Quit has developed a shisha factsheet covering key information about shisha and the health harms associated with smoking it. Many people incorrectly believe that the water in a shisha pipe filters harmful substances from the smoke, but shisha smoke still contains harmful chemicals, and smoking shisha is harmful to health. Explore the factsheet and resources at https://bit.ly/2JQi78S.

A huge congratulations to everyone behind Flip the Vape Week 2026👏 The reach is impressive, but the positive impact on young people is what really stands out. We're proud to see initiatives like this making a difference in communities across Australia.

Six ACCHOs. Six states. One week. In June 2026, Flip the Vape Week came to life in each community in its own way: on buses, on billboards, across community spaces and local events, and through more than 30 young ambassadors sharing the message on their own Country. The campaign reached 5.27 million people, with more than 42,000 clicks through to quit support. But this is the result that stayed with me: when we spoke with young people face to face, 76% said it helped them stay away from vaping. A huge thank you to every ACCHO, TIS team and young ambassador who made it happen, including Galambila Aboriginal Health Service, FIAAI, Danila Dilba Health Service, Nunkuwarrin Yunti, GRAMS - Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Service and Victorian Aboriginal Health Service part of the first six. We're now planning Flip the Vape Week 2027. Expressions of Interest are open now until 1 November. If your ACCHO or TIS team would like to be involved, you can register here, it takes about two minutes and there's no commitment: https://lnkd.in/gwwgh6fB I'll be in Canberra tomorrow. If you're there, let me know and say hello; I'd love to catch up. #FlipTheVapeWeek

Support starts with a conversation. 💛 R U OK? Leading public health organisations have banded together to welcome important new laws which strengthen the ability of Victorian tobacco licensing enforcement officers and Victoria Police to combat illicit tobacco. New powers include the ability to issue closure orders to retailers found trading without a tobacco licence or selling illicit tobacco.   The announcement brings Victoria in line with other states and territories which have taken strong action against illicit tobacco. It’s now time to see the new laws put into practice to best protect Victorians from the harms of addictive, cheap tobacco products.   And remember, regardless of where it is bought, or how much it costs, all tobacco is harmful. Smoking-related illness still kills 66 Australians every day. For support to quit, visit call 13 7848.  Lung Foundation Australia, Public Health Association of Australia, Stroke Foundation, Australian Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance (ACDPA), Diabetes Victoria, Heart Foundation and Australian Medical Association (VIC). We’re joining Cancer Council Australia to flag that proposals to slash tobacco tax and legalise commercial vape sales risk undoing decades of progress in reducing smoking and preventing cancer. With daily smoking at a historic low of 5.6%, we're calling for continued focus on reducing nicotine addiction, strengthening enforcement against illicit tobacco, and protecting the next generation from the harms of smoking and vaping. The latest AIHW data shows that 90% of young people have never smoked, highlighting the impact of sustained tobacco control efforts. "Tobacco control in Australia has become increasingly complex. These findings demonstrate that a combination of policy, education, campaigns and services to support quitting are lowering Australians’ desire to keep using nicotine products." – Rachael Andersen, Quit Director These findings are a reminder that evidence-based tobacco control works, and that continued support is needed to help Australians overcome nicotine dependence and achieve successful quit outcomes. Today we kicked off our VicHealth-funded Multi University Vape Free Uni Hackathon! This project brings together 120 students from six Victorian universities and empowers them to develop ideas for student-led vaping prevention and cessation initiatives that can be implemented across their university campuses. Our students heard from experts from Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth), Quit, and Monash University about the history of nicotine prevention, current youth-focused vaping prevention campaigns, the harms of vaping, and findings from the most recent research on vaping and nicotine use on campus. In this hackathon, students are working in multi-university and multidisciplinary teams, bringing together their knowledge, skills and insights from across Victorian university campuses to tackle vaping on campus and promote Vape Free Uni's — a truly collaborative effort towards collective impact! We’re so excited to see what they come up with. 🚀 A huge thank you to Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth) for their ongoing support, and to Chris Barton, Heather O'Donnell, Kiran Nair and Michelle Jongenelis for so generously sharing their expertise and a special thanks to Renee de Silva for co-hosting the session 🙂 Chris Barton Susan Kotwas Melis Selamoglu Isabella Papadopoulos A/Professor Ines Rio Kim Turudia Monash Public Health and Preventive Medicine

We’re proud to launch 'Sounds Like' and 'One Step,' two campaigns focused on motivating and supporting people to quit smoking. Originally developed by Cancer Council Western Australia, 'Sounds Like' highlights the early health impacts of smoking, while 'One Step', developed by Quit, encourages people to approach quitting as a series of small, achievable steps. Together, the campaigns aim to build understanding of smoking harms and support greater confidence to quit. Grounded in research showing that combining motivational and capacity-building messaging drives the strongest behaviour change outcomes. Explore the ‘Sounds Like’ and 'One Step,' campaign resources and share them with your networks: https://lnkd.in/ePxDz9Sg
