What does it take to build a successful newsroom in today’s changing media landscape? And what happens when you challenge some of the assumptions about how a newsroom should reach and engage its audience? The Continent News offers a fascinating case study. The Continent News is a pan-African newsroom that has rethought the relationship between journalism, audiences and distribution. Its weekly newspaper is designed specifically for mobile reading and distributed through messaging platforms. But the innovation goes much further than that. The newsroom has built a model around: → Putting audiences where they already are, rather than relying solely on website traffic → Designing journalism for sharing and peer-to-peer distribution → Creating a curated, distinctive editorial experience rather than chasing the endless news cycle → Building a pan-African newsroom and network of journalists → Thinking differently about audience, distribution and sustainability. What can other newsrooms learn from The Continent’s approach? Join us for an RFW Masterclass led by Christine Mungai where we’ll hear directly from The Continent about how they have built their newsroom strategy, what has worked, what hasn't, and what other independent newsrooms can take from their experience. 📅 15 September 2026 ⏰ 3:00–4:00 PM CET 💻 Online Whether you're leading a newsroom, working in editorial, audience, product, revenue or media innovation, we'd love to have you join us. Mexico has become a major battleground over the regulation of ultra-processed food — and the fight is increasingly taking place in the courts. A new investigation by Quinto Elemento Lab and Armando Talamantes found 193 legal challenges by the food and beverage industry in Mexico, targeting measures including warning labels, sugary-drink taxes and restrictions on junk food advertising. The investigation reveals how litigation can be used not only to challenge regulation, but to delay public-health measures and shape policy. In 2014, the killing of Nido Tania, a 20-year-old student from Arunachal Pradesh, sparked national outrage and led to the creation of the Bezbaruah Committee, which was tasked with addressing racial discrimination and violence against people from India’s Northeast. More than a decade later, many of the committee’s recommendations remain unimplemented. The recent death of Anjel Chakma has brought the issue back into the spotlight, raising difficult questions about whether enough has been done to protect Northeastern communities from discrimination and violence. More than ৳70 million was spent on political advertising on Facebook during Bangladesh’s 2026 election campaign, according to an investigation by Dataful and Polash D.. The investigation tracked more than 25,000 political ads and found that spending was often driven not just by political parties, but by individual candidates and networks of supporter pages — raising questions about transparency, coordination and who is really behind political messaging online. With more than half of the spending concentrated in just seven districts, the findings offer a revealing picture of how Bangladesh’s election campaign moved into the digital sphere. What does it take to build investigative journalism that can challenge powerful interests and make a difference in people’s lives? In our latest conversation for Report for Impact, we speak with Kennia Velázquez Carranza , an investigative journalist and co-founder of POPLab in Mexico. Kennia talks about her journey into journalism, the realities of investigative reporting in a challenging environment, and the importance of building independent, locally rooted newsrooms. Her experience offers a powerful reminder that impact journalism isn't only about the stories that get published. It is also about who gets to tell those stories, whose interests they serve, and what happens when journalism gives communities the information they need to demand accountability.
