We're actually already in an energy-abundant future. The only problem is the energy abundance is stranded in time and space Texas curtailed nearly 10,000 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy last year. California curtailed more than 3,700. Rather than build another data center that waits years for a grid connection, we built RELIC to tap that stranded power directly, behind the inverter, before it ever reaches the grid. We're live in Texas, California, and Massachusetts, with a pipeline in the hundreds of megawatts underway. Read more from Catherine Boudreau at Latitude Media, linked in the comments.

Energy Technology
Every solar and wind plant is a latent data center. Rune powers it on.
About us
Rune connects wasted power to the compute that needs it. Solar plants generate electricity the grid can't take: clipped by inverters, curtailed by operators, gone before it ever reaches a meter. Meanwhile, AI needs more power than new construction can deliver in time. Rune deploys hardware, software, and financial solutions to put this power to work. We build modular micro data centers that install directly at solar sites, bypassing the traditional grid entirely and turning stranded power into compute. We're backed by Spark Capital, Union Square Ventures, and Lowercarbon Capital.

"That's how we should build data centers, modular, repeatable technology made in factories and deployed in the field." – CEO William Layden on MTS Live. William joined Sophia Dew to discuss our $40 million Series A and Rune's vision for the future. Construction has inverse economies of scale, so the bigger the project, the more expensive it gets. Manufacturing works the other way. Building RELIC at scale, the same way solar panels get built, is how we're rolling out 100 megawatts over the next year at sites across Texas, California, and beyond. AI infrastructure can scale without the years-long grid queue.

Did you catch William Layden on TBPN last week? Our CEO joined Jordi Hays and John Coogan to talk about why solar overbuild leaves so much power sitting unused, and how RELIC captures it for AI compute in weeks, not years.

Most AI infrastructure sits on standby, waiting years for a grid connection that may never come. Today, we’re announcing our $40 million Series A, led by Spark Capital, with Union Square Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, Activate Capital, Timeless Partners, Committed Capital, Logos, and Hersh Desai joining alongside existing investor Vestas Ventures, bringing our total funding to $53.5 million. Alongside the round, founders William Layden and Varun Palivela are unveiling RELIC, Renewable Energy Linked Intelligent Compute, the first drama-free data center. No permitting fights, no grid queue, no years-long build, just compute dropped straight onto sites that are already generating power. Every solar plant is a latent data center. Rune powers it on, and we're hiring the team to scale it. Read more in Fast Company by Adele Peters. Article link in the first comment.

Instead of waiting years for grid upgrades, what if compute moved directly to the power source? William Layden, CEO and Co-founder at Rune, joined Cody to explain why the real constraint on AI growth might be the grid itself, and how his company is building modular, behind-the-meter micro data centers that plug directly into solar and wind plants.
