Yesterday, we were live with Sam Altman from OpenAI DevDay. It was Sam’s third appearance on the show, his first in person, and his first since TBPN joined OpenAI. Having Sam back got me thinking about one of our long-term goals with the show, which is building towards our 50th conversation with a guest. A lot of podcasting gets caught up in “I got to book the big guest. I got to check the box. I got to get this person and that person.” Building rapport is something I think interviewers don’t take seriously in the moment. From day one we were hunting for the thing we can do for 30 years and compound for 30 years. How can I be interviewing them 30 years from now? I think an audience feels that, and that's why I'm thinking about building towards conversations that might be decades away. You see the way Andrew Ross Sorkin interacts with big CEOs. It’s clear they’ve talked many times over years off mic and on mic. That understanding and rapport takes 30 years to develop. That’s what I’m particularly focused on, you just can't fake the time it takes to get to calling back to previous interviews, understanding a certain person’s sense of humor, and knowing where they’re having fun. We'll get there. Until then, thank you Sam for coming on the show and our traveling TBPN crew for nailing the remote broadcast from SF.

This week, we brought TBPN to OpenAI DevDay for the first time since joining OpenAI. It was also our first time having Sam Altman on the show in person. We’ve talked about bringing a little College GameDay energy to tech events, and taking the show to Fort Mason delivered on that, all the way down to friends of the show like Stripe’s Jeff Weinstein photobombing the livestream in the background. Between the remote broadcast and the Codex x ModRetro activation I shared yesterday, including having the legend Casey Neistat on the show to talk about it, it was a jam-packed couple of days. Thanks to Sam, Thibault, Alexander, Andrew, 🦄 Peter, Kathy K. and Casey for joining us on the show, and to the TBPN production crew for making it all happen. Best in the biz!

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says the advice to pick one thing to build and pour all your focus into it no longer applies. "The canonical advice that was correct two years ago was, 'Pick one, and put all your effort into it, because you can't build all 30 things.'" "You can now build all 30 things. And you can get people to use them all. And you can work more on the ones that work." "So I think this mindset of lots of ideas, quick feedback, and being open to a lot of things not working is great for this new era for how people build."

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says the way to preserve a startup culture while your company scales is to have the work and expectations per person go up over time: "The way that big companies go wrong is that there are too many people with not enough to do and they fight each other over these fake levels of work." "If everyone is really busy with real impact, and the amount of work per person, stuff to do per person, keeps increasing, then you can fight the slow drag and politics of the big company."

Yesterday was my first OpenAI DevDay and the unveiling of the first activation I’ve led soup to nuts with my OpenAI hat on. Among all the big announcements from a lot of very smart, hardworking people on the OpenAI team, my contribution was giving people a fun way to play with the magic of Codex and create their own Game Boy games. We brought Codex and ModRetro together so developers could create their own games and play them on ModRetro’s Chromatic handheld, and the best part was that every attendee got to take home a special-edition OpenAI DevDay Chromatic of their own. I first met ModRetro’s CEO, Torin Herndon, in 2024. We became fast friends, and I’m also an angel investor in the company, so I was pumped to bring my worlds together for this one, including getting ModRetro’s head of storytelling, Casey Neistat, involved at DevDay and on yesterday’s TBPN stream live from Fort Mason. Thanks to Torin and the ModRetro team, everyone at OpenAI who helped make this happen, and Sam Altman for sharing it on the DevDay stage.
