Serving the Tennessee Valley through Energy, Environment, and Economic Development.

About us

For more than nine decades, the Tennessee Valley Authority has provided affordable electricity, environmental stewardship and economic development opportunities to the Tennessee Valley. TVA was established by Congress in 1933 to address a wide range of environmental, economic and technological issues, including the need for low-cost electricity, and navigation and flood control along the Tennessee River system. TVA is fully self-financing, funding virtually all operations through electricity sales and power system bond financing. TVA makes no profit and receives no tax money. TVA’s power service territory includes most off Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia, covering 80,000 square miles and providing electricity to 10 million people at prices below the national average, TVA sales electricity to 153 local power companies and 61 directly served customers, including 54 industrial customers and 7 military and federal installations. Mission: TVA was built for the people – to improve the quality of life in a seven-state region through the integrated management of the region’s resources. The mission focuses on three key areas: • Energy – To provide reliable, affordable electric power throughout the Tennessee Valley. • Environment – To be a steward of the region’s natural resources. • Economic Development – To serve as a catalyst for sustainable economic development. ENERGY: As the nation’s largest government-owned power provider, TVA delivers reliable, competitively priced electricity local power companies and major industrial customers and federal installations. ENVIRONMENT: The Tennessee Valley Authority is committed to limiting the environmental impact of its operations and protecting the natural resources of the region. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: TVA helps strengthen the regional economy by building partnerships with communities and the business sector to foster job growth and retention.

  • 💡🔧 Behind every light switch is a team hard at work! Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant Unit 1 is undergoing a scheduled outage, and employees and contractors are investing many hours to ensure continued safe, reliable operations. As we work towards a nuclear-powered future, we have to look back on the many hands that built Unit 1 and brought it into commercial operation on August 1, 1974! #TBT

  • The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission today issued the nation’s first construction permit for GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy’s BWRX‑300 small modular reactor at TVA’s Clinch River Nuclear Site near Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This significant milestone underscores TVA’s proven track record of nuclear excellence, safe operations, and long-term energy leadership. This achievement was made possible through strong collaboration among local, state, and federal leaders, the NRC’s rigorous and transparent review, and industry partners committed to advancing safe, reliable nuclear innovation. Partnership is how progress happens — and the Tennessee Valley is leading the way.

  • Our team helped discover a critically endangered species and one of the rarest mussels in North America, in the Upper Caney Fork River! Now, alongside Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources, we’re working to increase its numbers and help bring this species back from the brink.

  • September has been one for the record books! ☀️ During some of the hottest days of the entire summer, our team worked hard to deliver record megawatts across miles of transmission lines in our seven-state region. 💪 This month, our team met a +30K megawatt demand on 17 days in September – shattering the previous record for September set in 2007 with one day with a 30K megawatt demand! ⚡ This isn’t possible without a dedicated team at our generation facilities and transmission crews working to keep you cool!

  • An osprey chick needed help after being tangled up in fishing line, and it took a team of experts to free the bird! After spotting the chick, our skilled team jumped into action to rescue the bird from its nest atop the South Holston Dam sluice tower alongside a crew from the Owl Ridge Raptor Center. The rescue took a turn when the bird flew from the nest to the lake below. Thinking quickly, the team grabbed a kayak and paddled to retrieve the bird. Once on shore, experts removed the line safely and treated the osprey’s injuries! A team at the Center continues to care for the young bird as it recovers. Help keep our critters safe by properly disposing of fishing line.

  • Last Saturday,we partnered with TWRA and other community organizations for a morning of hands-on learning and outdoor fun at Lincoln County Sportsman's Field Day!⚡️💡 Hundreds of local families attended to explore Tennessee’s natural heritage, learn new skills, and connect with stewardship organizations. TVA booths featured hard hats, a Dam Safety crash-test boat, a welding simulator, and our robot dog, Spot! We appreciate TWRA’s partnership and the chance to inspire the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts!🌳
