  • Last Saturday, Teens United volunteers gathered at Trusted World for a morning of meaningful service. The results speak for themselves. Together, our teen volunteers sorted clothing, prepared hygiene essentials and helped get food resources ready to move for North Texas neighbors. The clothing they sorted alone will help serve 460 people in our community. It was a powerful reminder that community impact is not limited by age. It is driven by heart and a willingness to show up. Thank you to every teen and parent who participated. Investing in the next generation of community leaders is one of the most important things we can do for North Texas. How does your organization engage young volunteers? Share in the comments. 👇

  • Jennifer Sampson is closing out 25 years at United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. Ask her what she is proudest of, and the answer always comes back to people. Not a campaign. Not a milestone. The staff who bring their talents to the mission every day. The board members willing to make hard decisions and open doors. The donors, nonprofit leaders and companies who chose to build alongside us. What that team built together reshaped how United Way works. Under Jennifer's leadership, we narrowed our focus to the three things that most shape a person's life—education, income and health. We moved from a decades-old, closed allocation system to open, competitive grantmaking, and we began tying investment directly to measurable outcomes. Today that work reaches 1.7 million North Texans a year—more than one in five people in the region. No partnership shaped that work more than Jennifer's with our chief strategy and impact officer, Susan Hoff. Seventeen years is a long time to build alongside someone—and it is why the work compounded. None of it was built to depend on one leader. Leadership, at its best, is not about making an organization dependent upon you. It is about helping build something strong enough to thrive without you. That's why the Aspire United 2030 goals—more children reading on grade level, more young adults earning living wages, more families connected to health coverage—remain our North Star well beyond any single tenure. In the video below, the leaders and partners who built alongside her share what her leadership has meant—to them and to North Texas. Jennifer concludes her 25 years with United Way today and begins a new chapter as the inaugural CEO of The Stephens Greth Foundation. Janelle Anderson, our new McDermott-Templeton President & CEO, joins the United Way team on November 1. Thank you, Jennifer. You'll always Live United—and so will we.

I thoroughly enjoyed joining yesterday's Social Venture Partners Dallas Social Innovation Luncheon for an engaging panel discussion on civic engagement. The program opened with an inspiring social impact spotlight from March to the Polls, where Executive Director Jessica Lugo shared how the organization is empowering North Texas high school students through voter registration and civic participation. A special thank you to the incomparable Keri Mitchell, Executive Director of Dallas Free Press, for moderating a thoughtful and dynamic conversation. Honored to join fellow panelists Christian Baum, Co-Founder and Executive Director The Cornerstone Project and civic engagement leader Denita Jones, MPA, League of Women Voters of Dallas to discuss the many ways civic engagement strengthens our communities. Our conversation explored voter registration, voter education, voter turnout, and the importance of nonpartisan mobilization efforts. We also discussed other essential forms of civic participation, including advocacy, volunteerism, jury service, community leadership, and the role philanthropy plays in supporting civic engagement, local journalism, civil discourse, and public awareness campaign initiatives across North Texas. To close the program, each panelist shared practical ways individuals can get involved. I highlighted the recently published book Ordinary People, Extraordinary Times by fellow Texan Skye Perryman (she/her), Founder and CEO of Democracy Forward. This USA Today and New York Times Bestseller offers seven actionable ways to help strengthen and reimagine our democracy. As a small way to pay it forward, I offered a signed copy of this book to one attendee. Congratulations to Emory McDowell, Chief of Staff at Hope Cottage, Inc, for taking home the prize! Thank you to SVP Dallas CEO Catherine Cuellar, the SVP Dallas team, and all SVP partners for hosting such a meaningful program. And a special shout-out to my incredible United Way of Metropolitan Dallas colleagues who came out to support. I'm grateful to work alongside people who are deeply committed to strengthening civic engagement and creating lasting change across our communities. Give. Advocate. Volunteer. #LiveUnited #CivicEngagement #CommunityImpact #Volunteerism #Advocacy United Way of Metropolitan Dallas Daniel Bouton Cathy Lee (Kang) Carshundra Watts Destiny Brown MBA, MSW Sienzhi Kouemo

  • Forty years ago, Ruth Sharp Altshuler brought North Texas philanthropists together around a simple idea: invest in this community, together. Today, the Tocqueville Society she founded is the largest chapter in the country. This past Tuesday, members gathered to mark that milestone. The luncheon featured a fireside conversation with the leaders of Fifth Third Bank, a historic $15.5 million gift from The Stephens Greth Foundation, and a tribute to Jennifer Sampson's tenure as our McDermott-Templeton President and CEO. For decades, Cheryl Hall of The Dallas Morning News has chronicled the people and generosity that shape this city. We're honored she was there to tell this chapter of the Live United story.
