Over my 25+ years in the software and emerging technology space, engaging with countless customers, I’ve learned that it is never about the technology. Magic happens when we listen to our customers, deeply understand their challenges, and find innovative solutions to problems. This belief has shaped our mission at Wisdom. As the population of Americans over age 65 is projected to reach 72 million by 2030, the demand for solutions that support aging in place are becoming increasingly critical. Recent data from Self Financial (visualized by Visual Capitalist) reveals a massive spread in estimated lifetime tax bills for average single filers across all 50 states. 📈 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝘅𝗲𝘀 To standardize the comparison across state lines, the study models a single filer based on these key baseline assumptions: • Working Career: 45 years of continuous employment with constant average earnings and tax rates. • Life Expectancy: 79.6 years total lifespan. • Property Ownership: Purchasing a home at age 40 and holding property through retirement. • Vehicle Ownership: Buying and registering 5 vehicles over a lifetime. • Tax Categories Included: Federal income tax, state income tax, sales tax, property tax, and vehicle taxes. 📍 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗮𝘅 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻 • New Jersey leads the nation at $1.36M in lifetime taxes—equivalent to 48.2% of total lifetime earnings. • 9 states exceed $1M in lifetime taxes, heavily concentrated in the Northeast (including Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and New York). 📍 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝘄𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗮𝘅 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻 • Florida comes in lowest at $508,980 in lifetime taxes (25.5% of lifetime earnings), driven largely by zero state income tax. • South Dakota ($516K), Arkansas ($518K), and Oklahoma ($526K) round out the lowest overall tax burdens. 📍 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝘅 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 No state income tax doesn't automatically equal a low overall tax burden.
