I'm beyond proud and excited to (finally!) announce my newest adventure as the founder and CEO of
Good Clean Dog.
I can't wait to share more about this company, our amazing team and what we're building. But today, I feel like reflecting a little on how we got here.
Several years ago, I found myself with the incredible opportunity to TAKE TIME OFF.
Such a gift, right?
It was so painful.
I've strived hard my entire adult life: initially out of necessity, sometimes out of insecurity and, later (thankfully), out of sheer joy. I found it incredibly difficult to take off the apparel of high achievement and stand in the naked vulnerability of no vocation for a while.
I was stir crazy, untethered, uninspired — and probably super annoying to the friends, family, and mentors holding my hand through it. But I was determined to sit with the discomfort until I figured out what I really wanted to do next.
It took three years.
Three years of false starts, terrible ideas, rejected LOIs and a pretty bruised ego. Three years of people asking, "What are you up to now, Jennifer?" without a great answer.
I almost compromised several times. I almost gave up several times.
And then one day, I took my dogs to the groomer.
I parked across the street, walked them through traffic and waited outside the tiny storefront while another customer checked in. And waited. And waited.
Then the sky opened up.
Suddenly, I was standing against the side of a building with two soaking wet, dirty dogs, debating whether to make a run for my clean car.
And that's when opportunity met experience.
I loved our groomer. I trusted her completely with my dogs. But as an entrepreneur, I knew there had to be a better way for pet parents to access this essential service.
I started doing my homework — beginning with the very groomer who had been taking care of my dogs. Spoiler alert:
Amanda Anselman liked the ideas enough to join me.
Another 3 years of research, development, acquisitions, mistakes and team building later,
Good Clean Dog was born.
I'm working harder - and having more fun - than ever in my career. Every day there is a reminder that this is EXACTLY what I hoped I would eventually find.
The lesson is a cliché, but clichés usually become clichés because they're true: this wouldn't have happened if I hadn't been willing to be uncomfortable for a while.
I learned something from every bad idea, every rejected LOI and every disappointment. I wanted the answer to come much faster than it did. I'm glad now that it didn't.
There are far too many people to thank here, so I'm going to attempt that in the comments. But
Craig Albrecht deserves a headliner call-out for believing in me - sometimes more than I believed in myself.
