I'd been called twice before and never had to report, so I assumed this time would be no different. Instead, it became one of the most fascinating and educational experiences of my lifetime. It wasn't how I planned to spend a week of my summer, but it gave me a perspective I'll carry with me for years. It reminded me how important it is to listen, keep an open mind, and approach decisions thoughtfully. If you're ever called to serve, lean into it. You may be surprised by what you learn! The people, the process ... It's something I'll never forget.

While not the best conditions, we were in the mountains, we had warm coffee, a tank full of gas, and a day of exploring in front of us. When we crested Logan Pass along Going to the Sun Road, we could see the McDonald Creek valley was obscured by low clouds, a lovely inversion. I immediately grew excited and wanted to find the best vantage point. I will always remember a trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota my parents brought me on when I was probably nine or ten years old. As we traversed the highway near where all the tourist traps are, I remember entering a fog and asking my mother about it. "We're in the clouds." She said. The idea of that blew my mind. I had a love for aviation in my early years and now here I was - in the clouds - as seen from the back seat of a Volkswagen. I sat back and enjoyed the moment quietly. I think those are the feelings that return to me when I visit mountains. My inner-child is alive and well and eager to find wonder in the world. Moment like these are just another gift that comes from photography.
