CANNRA issues factsheet about “FULL SPECTRUM” CBD products…. . Conclusions “Full spectrum” is not a well-defined term but is frequently used to describe hemp and CBD products. Full spectrum CBD products contain THC and can be intoxicating, especially to new or naïve consumers. The more CBD in the product, generally, the more THC it will have. Because they contain many ingredients, including THC, “full spectrum” products can be complex to regulate. Regulation of any cannabinoid - whether intoxicating or not - should include clear labeling to inform and educate consumers, and consider ways to keep consumers safe, prevent product abuse, and prevent recreational access by children and adolescents.

The problem with most cannabis marketing is they sell the feature and not the benefits. “Airflow” is a feature in a pre-roll. “Joints that don’t clog” is the benefit. No one cares about the airflow, they only care if it will affect their experience. Please start talking in language a customer cares about. They’re the ones who buy your product.

In cannabis, the true test of strategy occurs after the deal closes. Integration challenges can arise due to state-by-state fragmentation, quality assurance failure modes, channel conflicts, and concerns about whether the operating system can scale without jeopardizing compliance or the brand itself. Three primary capital strategies are emerging within the industry: * Asset-heavy vertical integration * Pure brand licensing * Hybrid infrastructure platforms Each of these strategies has inherent strengths. Asset-Heavy Vertical Integration Asset-heavy vertical integration is a strategic approach centered on control and synergies across inputs, manufacturing, and distribution. However, this model concentrates regulatory and execution risks, and its effectiveness depends on maintaining a fully utilized footprint and a replicable playbook across different markets. Brand Licensing - (Admitted bias - The Clear Brands has embraced this strategy completely) Licensing offers a strategic advantage for brands looking to expand reach without owning every facility. This approach can deliver option value across various geographies, but it requires rigorous specifications, testing procedures, and partner governance to ensure the brand maintains its consistency everywhere. Hybrid Infrastructure Platforms Hybrid platforms are creating a “shared services” layer, including compliance, QA, manufacturing systems, and distribution standards that brands can connect to. This strategy is particularly appealing for bolt-on opportunities, provided the platform is truly interoperable and not just a standalone solution. The central question is not which model is currently popular, but which approach best reduces operational risk while preserving brand integrity. Ultimately, capital gravitates toward predictability, since repeatable returns depend on it. This principle is consistent across all consumer categories. But behind the slick marketing lies a dangerous reality: misleading specs, incomplete safety certifications, and subpar build quality. This text isn’t about bias—it’s about danger and deception, and it’s time for the cannabis community to push back. Part 1: Spectrum Spec Inflation—The µmol Mirage Chinese Manufacturers Use Misleading µmol/J Numbers Brands such as Mars Hydro market spec sheets boasting 2.8–3.2 µmol/J efficacy. Yet, these figures often include far-red (>730 nm) or UV bands—spectra cannabis barely uses—resulting in gross overestimation when compared to legitimate PAR measurements (400–700 nm). An independent user reported stark differences: “I … was getting 16–24k lux reading but … only 300 PPFD” with a Mars Hydro TS600 (growdiaries.com, albopepper.com, ilgmforum.com). CocoForCannabis tested the Mars Hydro SP3000 and found real-world PPE of 2.12 µmol/J, not 2.8 as advertised (cocoforcannabis.com). This deception leads growers to overestimate performance, resulting in: Underwhelming flower development Missed environmental targets (DLI) Wasted power Part 2: The UL Safety Sham—Ratings That Don’t Matter Plug-Only UL: A Fire Hazard Waiting So many of these Chinese-imported lights boast “UL” certification—but it only applies to the cord or plug, not the whole unit. A real UL listing covers comprehensive testing—thermal performance, fire risk, insulation—on the fully assembled fixture. These often-ignored properties are not cheap to certify. Instead, export units simply swap in a UL-certified cord and slap the logo on the box. California’s cannabis industry deserves transparency, fairness, and due process. This week, meaningful progress was made. Working in close partnership with Assemblymember Tom Lackey, the California Cannabis Industry Association is proud to support the introduction of AB 1826 — critical legislation designed to restore balance and accountability to California’s cannabis recall and embargo process. This bill is a direct response to what our members have experienced on the ground. AB 1826 introduces several important safeguards for licensed operators: 1️⃣ Evidence First: requires supporting documentation, including lab data and chain of custody, at the time of any adulteration or recall notice. 2️⃣ Right to Meet & Confer: establishes a process ensuring licensees have a seat at the table before decisions are finalized. 3️⃣ No Premature Destruction: prevents forced product destruction until due process is completed. 4️⃣ Fast-Track for Perishables: requires expedited judicial review for perishable goods. 5️⃣ End to Coerced Waivers: prohibits forcing businesses to waive appeal rights to lift embargoes or approve recalls. At its core, AB 1826 is about due process, ensuring enforcement is transparent, consistent, and fair for responsible, licensed operators who are working hard to comply with California law. The Cannabis New Year Resolution:  Focus on Simplicity Many business challenges can be solved through- 💥 Strategic and operational simplicity, and its corollary, taking out costly, bloating complexity 💔 In a typical MSO or LP, decision making and operational execution can be tough, exhausting, and fraught with errors, especially when the company has a myriad of products, assets, inputs, and suppliers. 📌 Business success often comes down to management’s ability to 1) accurately forecast revenue, profit etc and 2) make the right strategic and tactical decisions as well as cope with their implications. Let’s break each down: 1️⃣ How likely are you going to forecast accurately? Not very. Coin toss math will illustrate the point: You have a 50% chance of success of predicting the outcome of the first toss. What isn’t intuitive about forecasting is that probabilities multiply, they don’t add. If you need to predict two tosses correctly in a row, you have a 50% × 50% = 25% chance of being correct. What about 10 tosses in a row? The math still maths: 0.5^10 = 0.0976% chance Or roughly 1 in 1,000 of being accurate 10 out of 10 times. When we make an estimate about the future, we are predicting a chain of conditional outcomes but with much more complexity and uncertainty (including Black Swan events). The math is unforgiving.  Even if your bets are 70% correct, by the time you string together 10 events: You still only have a 0.7^10, or a 2.8% chance of getting all 10 correct 2️⃣ Making the right (and finite number) of decisions Unlike coin tosses, real life outcomes aren’t binary.  You must account for numerous combinations and permutations of your strategies & tactics as well as the implications of those choices.  Each business activity requires different amounts of time, skills, and resources. There could be dozens of possible (expected & unexpected) outcomes at each stage of strategy development, planning, and operational execution.    Let us say you want to launch a new product with 5 potential strategic avenues. You can only fund and manage 3 of these paths. For simplicity, we will assume you can forecast with 100% accuracy. How many go to market variations of the 3 strategies will there be? I’ll spare you the complicated math: There are at least 35 different ways of planning and implementing the 3 strategies. 😞 The inevitable result is too much of everything: products, inputs, activities, and often people...aka complexity.  Complexity = higher costs, strategy & brand confusion, increased errors, employee ‘busy work’ and bloated operations.    The conclusion is clear:  picking even a few strategies can produce lots of complexity.  Imagine what pursuing 5 major strategies will do? 💡 In 2026, it’s time to simplify and rationalize. 🚨 CA cultivations reportedly being raided by ICE. How will this impact the market? 🚨 California cannabis operators woke up to unsettling news: licensed cultivation facilities are now being targeted by ICE raids. At a time when wholesale flower prices are already at all-time lows, many of us thought we’d finally hit bottom. But actions like this, coupled with no meaningful progress on state or federal regulatory relief, could very well create a new, even lower floor. Beyond the immediate chilling effect, the ripple impacts on operators are hard to ignore: 🥴 Operational disruptions and loss of key staff 😤 Managerial time diverted to deal with administrative and legal headaches 😢 Increased compliance costs and legal exposure 🥺 Erosion of morale within teams and a more risk-averse business culture 🤨 Loss of trust from partners and investors who see heightened enforcement as instability It’s tough to find the silver lining here… but being a serial optimist, I wonder if these challenges might finally push the market to truly bottom out, force supply contraction, and (eventually) support higher prices for wholesale flower. But then… is that actually a good thing? If wholesale prices go up for retailers, will they pass those costs on to consumers? The 2026 California Cannabis Awards just opened submissions, and the timing is not accidental. California operators are navigating compressed margins, regulatory pressure, and an uncertain federal landscape. In that environment, visibility and validation are not vanity metrics. They are business strategy. The CCA has positioned itself as a state-sanctioned, scientifically judged competition with lab testing by SC Labs and standardized evaluation through Budist. Winners are showcased inside the California State Fair, placing regulated cannabis in front of mainstream audiences, policymakers, and institutional stakeholders. That integration is significant. This year also introduces a Home Grow Competition, acknowledging the cultural foundation that predates licensing and commercialization. It is a reminder that legalization did not invent cannabis excellence. It formalized it. Cannabis education is key to understanding its benefits and the nuances between different growing methods. There's space for all types of cannabis—indoor, mixed light, and sun-grown—as long as quality and organic practices are prioritized. Currently, sun-grown farmers in California need support through consumer education. Many consumers and bud tenders lack the knowledge to differentiate products beyond THC levels. Just like starting with a beer instead of hard liquor, cannabis exploration should begin with understanding terpenes and cultivars to find the right fit. Arizona cannabis retailers are voluntarily recalling several batches of cannabis concentrates and edibles over possible pesticide contamination. Where are California’s “Weed Deserts”? 🤔 More than half of cannabis sales in California still occur in the illicit market. One key driver? Consumer access. In partnership with researchers at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, ERA Economics developed the California Cannabis Access Map (CCAM) to identify communities with limited access to licensed retail cannabis. Key insights:  • 30.5% of Californians live in areas with low access to licensed storefronts  • Nearly 1 in 5 live in Low-Income, Low Access tracts  • Counties with lower access show significantly higher illicit market share Access matters — local prohibitions effectively push consumers to the illicit market. Cannabis companies must maximize the ratio of revenue-producing staff to non-revenue-producing staff. Revenue-producing staff are salespeople, manufacturers, and budtenders. They bring in money to the business. Non-revenue-producing staff are managers, administrators, creatives, and c-suite executives. They cost the business money. Revenue-producing staff have workflows that can demonstrate profitability at a glance. Non-revenue-producing staff produce value that is harder to pin down. Adding non-revenue-producing staff should only be done in absolute necessity, under circumstances of true, sustained pain for the company due to the staffing gap. Likewise, even with sustained pain from exceptional revenue growth, you should be working dligently to do more with the same revenue-producing team. Ask yourself: how could we do this with our current team? Often, it comes down to: Better automation. Better SOPS. Better AI integration. Better execution. Better motivation. Building a dream team is absolutely essential to building a successful company, but too often, cannabis founders look to a new hire to spur growth or manage a project, instead of building better systems that augment the productivity of their current team.
