⭐ Ten things creatives can learn from Alyssa Liu’s gold medal ⭐ As a Bay Area hometown hero (an ice cream shop just blocks from me gave her free ice cream for life), Alyssa Liu brings a different energy to elite performance. It’s been a fun ride watching the city of Oakland rally behind her. What stands out isn’t just that she won. It’s how she thinks. Here are ten things creatives can learn from her mindset: 1. Your life outside of work strengthens your work. She’s said her friendships matter more than skating. Relationships regulate us. Just look at the footage of her running to hug her friends after winning gold. 2. Discipline doesn’t have to mean deprivation. She’s openly said she doesn’t diet. In a sport obsessed with controlling women’s bodies, that’s radical. 3. Joy is not the opposite of excellence. She returned to skating only on terms that prioritized fun and lovingness. When she’s on the rink, she's fully herself. 4. Winning isn’t everything. She’s said what matters is the journey and the process. Not just the output. 5. Detachment is a superpower. “I connect with everything but am attached to nothing.” 6. There’s nothing to lose. “If you’re there, you’re gaining something.” Presence is a gift. 7. Play lowers the stakes — and raises performance. When everything is an experiment, failure loses its edge. She’s even said, “If I fall, at least I’m still at the Olympics wearing this dress.” 8. Pressure is optional. “You’re going to have to explain to me what Olympic pressure is.” Emotional intelligence like that is powerful. 9. Sustainability beats intensity. Stepping away and returning on your own terms is strength. 10. Quiet confidence is powerful. You don’t have to look tortured to be serious. You don’t have to suffer to succeed. You don’t have to be the loudest person in the room to shine. Alyssa flipped her ponytail and laughed her way to the top. “Pressure creates diamonds” is the narrative we’ve absorbed. But sometimes joy creates gold. In creative industries, we glorify grind culture. Maybe the real edge is protecting your joy.
