David Luhr posted thisHad a breakthrough recently with getting decent CSS from agents. Let's call it HTML-Driven Development: - Craft unstyled HTML to control the structure, semantics, accessibility, and even class names - Then, ask the agent to style it, using existing styles and variables CSS as reference This still needs fine tuning, but it's the first time agents have done a decent job at styling that doesn't require a ton of rework. Until this point, it's always taken more time to rework the output to get it up to standard compared to just doing it from scratch. There's some combination of this workflow and the recent models that is starting to shift their viability more toward the "front-of-the-frontend," where things are much more nuanced and situational. Us as humans still need to be 100% accountable for our code, especially when it comes to safety and accessibility. But, it's only recent that agents might save some time in the drafting stage with usable output.

David Luhr posted thisMuch of the value of coding agents comes from interpreting natural language requests and deciding which traditional software tools to use in response. They are increasingly useful as a flexible adapter/coordinating layer for existing, efficient, predictable software.

David Luhr posted thisThere's a disconnect with generating high fidelity designs with AI. The bottleneck of design and engineering isn't ideas, it's gradually defining the right idea. The challenges of design and engineering aren't creating high fidelity designs or writing the code. It's finding the value, making tradeoffs along the way, and knowing what still needs polish. In essence, we're automating the wrong things. Sure, it can be helpful to get lots of ideas and discover something surprising. But, there's a risk in starting with high fidelity. It constrains our thinking. It implicitly embeds hundreds of tradeoffs without our involvement. It's like walking 10 miles in a set direction before we've asked "where do we want to go?"

David Luhr shared thisDark mode isn't just to look cool. It's an important accessibility feature that makes the experience better for everyone. Light mode causes eye strain and discomfort for me across a day. Dark mode solves this and makes content more legible for me. Shot out to the product team for making dark mode available in Buffer! I'm so impressed with what they accomplished with our design system.

David Luhr liked thisDavid Luhr liked thisThe speed at which a product is developed doesn't inherently make the product better or worse. The number of commits doesn't make the product better or worse. The number of people or agents working on it doesn't make it better or worse. The number of hours you’re pouring into it doesn’t make it better or worse. Working on a weekend, or late into the evening, doesn’t make it better or worse. Talking about these things sounds like it’s talking about the product, but it’s not talking about the product. Those are all development metrics and styles of work. They don't speak to the product itself. They're all back of the house. Important to those making the work, but not inherently important to the people using the work. Development metrics and style say nothing about fit. They say nothing about quality. They say nothing about clarity. They say nothing about usability. They say nothing about utility. They say nothing about performance. They say nothing about how customers feel when they use your product. It's like reviewing a restaurant by talking about how many cooks were in the kitchen, how long the shift lasted, how many orders they fired, or how late they stayed cleaning up. None of that tells you about the meal, the product, the customer’s experience. Mistaking making for the thing you've made is like confusing the kitchen for the meal or the blueprint for the building. They're connected, but they're not the same thing. One of them matters a whole lot more than the other.

Your design team isn't the problem—your operating model is. Even the best design systems fail when organizations lack the infrastructure to support them. The real issue isn't design talent or deliverables—it's misaligned working practices. Without cross-functional collaboration built into your operating model, you'll face: • Design arriving too late or addressing wrong problems • 40-60% longer cycle times and double the rework • Documentation scattered across tools with lost context • Compounding UX debt that grows faster than teams can fix The solution isn't more designers—it's establishing shared practices: collaborative discovery rituals, integrated planning, common language and artifacts, and quality gates that include experience criteria.
