Jason Fiedler shared thisJust the other day, I had a friend pay $800 out-of-pocket in NYC to see a psychiatrist, in-person and a week later than he needed. The mental health crisis is still in full swing, and centers around the shortage of providers that can actually prescribe the medication that shifts payer cost curves. Congrats to Robert Krayn, Georgia Gaveras, DO, Christian Freese, Rachael Kobida (Kuehn), Samson Walla & the rest of the Talkiatry team on this fundraising milestone. We are very grateful at Left Lane Capital to be investors and for the hard work and passion we've seen over the past five years. I think we're at this period right now where the Retail Landscape is entirely changing; what's in these four walls is totally changing - it's a service economy, a food economy, and a social entertainment economy now... we're entering this era of building the new SIM cities." "I think a lot of people focus on objective NPS - "we have an NPS of 90" and that's not that great if the average NPS in the industry is 87 right. What's really important is that NPS Delta between your NPS and the next best or next most popular incumbent option. It's not the brands themselves in isolation that I was like this is the best thing ever but relative to the next best incumbent it was just such a stark contrast that it made it more unfairly easy for them to succeed and steal market share. There is no place in the world like FJ. Fabrice Grinda and Jose Marin helped pioneer super-angel investing, a collaborative, network-driven model that still sounds unfathomable when I describe it. I had the privilege of working on almost 500 investments and raising capital from LPs in 20+ countries. For the rest of my life I'll remember the late-night debates, the thesis-building (and debauchery) at offsites, and working with a group of colleagues who became extremely close friends. Fabrice and Jose - thank you for taking a chance on a junior IR associate and trusting me with your firm. From hunting in Spain to kitesurfing at Fabrice's villa in Turks and Caicos, fundraising from Riyadh to Bangkok, raising a SPAC (oops!), and Halloween in Shanghai: what a ride. Arne H. Halleraker, my Nordic brother from another mother - you were the best partner I could ask for. You bring an engineer's rigor to investing, and taught me so much about management, science, technology and strange Norwegian traditions :) I'm convinced you can go down as an all-time great frontier tech investor. As for what's next- if you know me, you know I'm an obsessive distance runner. An ekiden (eh-kee-den) is a long-distance relay race that started in Japan more than a century ago. Each runner carries a sash called the tasuki for one leg, then hands it to the next teammate. As I wrote in Venture's Nifty Fifty Moment, great companies now stay private longer than the funds that backed them were even built to last. Venture has quietly turned into a race with no finish line. I like to say that one of the polite lies of venture capital is the 10-year fund life. Can't wait to read it.Jason Fiedler liked this🚨 WORKING PAPER ALERT 🚨 Really excited to share “Paying for Itself? Value (Mis)Alignment in Subscriptions” with Shin Oblander, Meng Yang and Young-Hoon Park. We study ~half a million subscribers across eight food delivery programs, including DashPass and Instacart+. The big question we tackle is when do consumers come out ahead, when do platforms, can both win at once, and what contextual factors inform these outcomes? Every dollar a subscriber saves in waived fees is fee revenue the platform gives up. Extra spending has to generate enough profit for both sides to win. Subscriptions increased spending across all eight programs, but thin margins left little extra profit to share. At our baseline contribution margin of 3% of consumer spending, just 6% of matched subscription relationships delivered BOTH subscriber savings and direct platform profit. Even if platforms could wave a magic wand and choose who enrolls, they would raise platform profits by selecting people who would lose on their subscriptions. Many consumers also keep paying despite substantial losses. Monthly subscribers with the largest accumulated losses cancel at roughly the same rate of those near break-even! Some practical takeaways: 1/ Before signing up, look back over your order history. Would this subscription have saved you money, net of subscription fees? Using the six months before program launch, 79% of eventual subscriber relationships that passed this test came out ahead (and were > 2x more likely to sign up in the first place), versus 39% of the others. A “no” doesn't guarantee a loss, but the odds aren’t good. 2/ Monthly buys flexibility. For annual plans, savings decline within the prepaid year. If usage fades, you're still on the hook. Annual discounts can be good for consistently heavy users but monthly plans allow early exit. 3/ Simple stopping rules can act as insurance. On a monthly plan, consider canceling for good when total savings since signup fall below total subscription fees paid the first time. Applied to our monthly plan data, with purchases unchanged, this would have cut total lifetime losses by about 80%, while average lifetime net savings fell from $104 to $99, only like 5%. A case for savings alerts and quicker cancellation. 4/ Scrutinize “pays for itself” advertising. A few big winners drive up the average. In the full sample, monthly net savings averaged $6.24 per subscription relationship, while the median relationship LOST $1.35 a month. Claims should show the median and the share who recoup their fees over a stated period, alongside averages. 5/ For platforms, more spending isn't enough. Creating more room for both sides to win may require better margins or benefits consumers value that cost little to provide, including benefits funded by merchants or partners. When we founded Reformation, the premise was simple: back companies with VC-quality founding teams and VC-quality metrics, but without the VC TAM to cleanly justify a $1B outcome. Help these companies compound growth vs. grow at all costs, and deliver a higher expected value for all involved parties. The line between the two categories was thin: a Reformation company would look like a VC company in many respects, but with a different risk-reward band. Today, that line between the two categories could not be thicker. The VC goal posts have shifted dramatically and it is extremely important founders understand this: if your early-stage business is not growing 10x+ YoY, you cannot raise venture capital. I have read this in headlines or heard it said in podcasts a bunch over the past few months, and after dozens of recent meetings with close friends across the VC ecosystem, I can confirm - straight from the source - that this is actually the new reality on the ground. If Reformation isn't focused on backing VC-style companies, why am I writing about this? Because founders need to understand, now more than ever, what path they are headed down. The VC firms are seeking 10x+ YoY growth - and willing to pay accordingly from a valuation perspective - en route to a $10B+ exit (note that this has changed by an order of magnitude from the $1B outcome underwriting I mentioned above). But as a founder, that path isn't your only ambitious, high-growth option. There is an entirely different path, the path of growth equity, where firms like ours are investing in high-quality businesses, run by incredible founders, and where the ultimate outcomes are in the hundreds of millions or even $1B+ range. This path comes with less dilution, more optionality, lower risk of a zero (or being buried below a pref stack), and significantly more alignment among founders, investors, and employees. Unicorn-or-bust (now decacorn-or-bust) is not the operating plan. If you are a founder running a great vertical software/AI business that's growing rapidly (or an investor in one) and interested in learning more about the growth equity path, I'd love to meet you. I come from the VC world, have lived and breathed Silicon Valley, and would be happy to share in more detail what I am seeing in both the VC and growth equity markets - which are now wider apart than ever before. We named our firm Reformation Partners to represent two core underlying goals: (1) To reform the way early-stage investing is done, and (2) To reform the definition of success for founders. For founders, decacorn-or-bust isn't the only ambitious path. Growth equity is the other one you should explore.

Founded little over a year ago, the company is run by CEO Camille van Horne and CTO Sean Cashin, both ex-Instacart. The company has $1b+ of inventory listed on the platform and 100+ major brands including Bliss and Versed. Fresh capital will be used to expand into apparel. Kinda interesting that a16z invested $9.5m in Atorie just 2 weeks ago to connect factories that produce for luxury brands directly to consumers. Both bets placed into AI-native disruptors for traditional consumer supply channels.

An emerging VC manager's fundraising lessons... the first two funds are a grind. Now, we’re on our third fund, it feels like we’re almost over the hump, but fundraising never gets easy for most of us. I want to congratulate the emerging VC firms presenting at this year’s RAISE Global conference. As former RAISE presenters, and (soon-to-graduate) emerging managers, we thought we’d share this LP Translator, a lighthearted guide to decoding what LPs really mean during the fundraising process. Fellow GPs, which ones did I miss? 👇 The LP Translator 📣 "Let’s stay in touch.” Translation: We’re not interested. “We want to see your track record develop.” Translation: Either we don't believe in your strategy, or we’re focused on managers with more buzz. “We’re not allocating to new managers right now.” Translation: We’re not allocating to you right now. "Show us your deals so we can get to know you.” Translation: We’d like free co-invests if you get something hot. “We need to see more DPI before we commit.” Translation: We don’t really understand VC, but we’re pretending to. “We’re fully allocated for this year; check in early next year.” Translation: Next year we’ll still be fully allocated (just not to you). “Call us before final close.” Translation: I’m too polite to say no at this time, so I’m kicking the can down the road. “Your fund is too small.” Translation: Okay, that one might actually be true (for some LPs). “We went through your data room and want to meet face-to-face.” Translation: We’re genuinely interested, keep going! “Can you send us your LPA for signature?” Translation: Let’s go! 🚀 -------------------------- Fundraising is a long game, longer than we ever expected. One of my agentic commerce predictions for 2026 in this recent Forbes piece: Matt Nichols, General Partner at Commerce Ventures, notes that the mechanics are already in motion. Looking ahead, he predicts that this year, "Agentic commerce transaction volume reaches meaningful levels as consumers advance from research to buying on AI platforms. 2026 will be the year that transactions are completed in these platforms." To this prediction, Nichols adds another: retailers will be forced to build "super-feeds" specifically for AI platforms. “These data feeds may involve monetary transactions that could include payments to AI platforms or payments to the retailer/brand (depending on balance of power).” https://lnkd.in/g65RAerA
