Hanneke Weitering reposted thisHanneke Weitering reposted thisTrying to fathom the latest efforts by Archer and Joby Aviation to enrich the U.S. legal profession, I'm thinking we've been taking the wrong approach to covering some aspects of the advanced air mobility sector. Rather than treating it as serious news, maybe we should start scripting the drama for reality TV purposes. I was already unconvinced that Joby's November 2025 lawsuit against their rival was good use of their resources and bandwidth. But the Archer countersuit that broke this week is, to coin a British idiom, mad as a box of frogs. According to Archer, Joby has been in league with the Chinese Communist Party in a plot to deceive the Uncle Sam with claims to be an 'all-American company.' Then we get into the alleged bogus shipments of thousands of pounds of hair clips, socks and napkins that supposedly were staged to cover up shipments of aerospace hardware from the People's Republic. Joby firmly refutes the accusations, adding that it "doesn't respond to nonsense." Anyhow, our AIN Media Group story is below in the comments. Stay tuned for "Joby faked the moon landings and is keeping Elvis captive in an underground vertiport." I wonder whether it might be a good idea for some start-ups to take a vow of silence and focus on bringing certifiable new aircraft to market.

Hanneke Weitering reposted thisHanneke Weitering reposted thisSCOOP! It's sad to be tentatively circling another start-up on the 'bankruptcy bingo card', especially when - as in the case of VoltAero - financial difficulties are emanating from further up the investment chain. With France's ACI Groupe facing its own tirade of trouble, the French company is now urgently seeking new backers to keep assembly of its first conforming prototype on track. A special mention to my Aviation International News colleague Charles Alcock for his invaluable help navigating French court websites. https://lnkd.in/ezQvEFAYVoltAero Seeks Funds for Hybrid-Electric Cassio Aircraft as Investor Bails | AINVoltAero Seeks Funds for Hybrid-Electric Cassio Aircraft as Investor Bails | AIN

Hanneke Weitering reposted thisHanneke Weitering reposted thisLilium’s dream of bringing a six-passenger eVTOL aircraft to market seems to have ended in insolvency, while Eviation has had to lay off almost all staff as its main shareholder seeks new backing. Plus, Airbus appears to be slowing down its efforts to electrify aviation in what could make a turning point for a major aerospace industry trend. FutureFlight editors Hanneke Weitering and Charles Alcock discuss what exactly is happening and what it means.

What started as a quick sketch on the whiteboard (or was it a chalkboard?!) of a route planning tool, became my first patent (and produced real licensing revenue!). This project really helped define my career path: employing cross-disciplined teammates to build tools that give pilots better situation awareness. At the end of the day, for me it's all about helping pilots make informed decisions that improve safety and efficiency. I've been very fortunate to work with some world-class collaborators at Honeywell Aerospace Technologies along the way. Cheers to the journey from sketch to solution! #Innovation #FlightSafety

The statements that made it into the calls reflect a more vigorous discussion happening behind the scenes about the FAA’s approach to certifying new technologies — something that also finds expression in the Aviation Innovation and Global Competitiveness Act recently introduced in Congress. My latest story for The Air Current connects the dots between MOCs, issue papers and the pending legislation as U.S. eVTOL developers continue to grind away at the daunting challenge of FAA type certification. https://lnkd.in/e7NnDffrUnderstanding U.S. eVTOL developers’ long trudge through certificationUnderstanding U.S. eVTOL developers’ long trudge through certification

Hanneke Weitering reacted on thisHanneke Weitering reacted on thisThe more I think about it, the more I find Archer's patent infringement lawsuit against eVTOL aircraft rival Vertical Aerospace embarrassing......for Archer. It will be for a court in Texas to decide the merits of the case. If I were on the jury, I would question how a start-up can claim exclusivity over design features such-as the V-tail, which has multiple precedents past and present (e.g Cirrus). If I were an Archer shareholder (which, for the avoidance of doubt, I am not), I would be asking why the company is blowing my money on lawyers when it still hasn't produced a conforming prototype and is behind its nearest competitor in flight testing at the start of a year in which it has previously said type certification would already be in hand and series production underway. I wanted to view the progress for myself of the former retired United 747-400 being re-assembled. The project is still fenced off to the public. There was plenty of construction workers working while I circled the building project. It is scheduled to be completed this spring. The nose of the jumbo jet fuselage is pointing north onto Denny Street . ✈ Back to the Future: JSX Bets Big on Turboprops ✈ After nearly disappearing from U.S. skies, large turboprops are making a comeback — and JSX is leading the charge. In my latest story for Aviation Week & Space Technology, I explore JSX’s bold decision to add ATR 42-600s to its fleet — a move that could unlock over 1,000 new airports and create a new era of connectivity for smaller communities. As JSX Chief Commercial Officer David Drabinsky told me: “It allows us to serve airports that the Embraer jets just do not, and that will allow us to expand into more communities, whether they’re underserved or high-end leisure destinations. We really see it as being a complementary service to the jets that we currently are flying today.” JSX is keeping its ERJ 135/145 fleet — growing to 52 jets this year — while layering turboprops on top to test new markets, boost frequencies, and bring its private-aviation-style experience to airports the big carriers have long ignored. The Case for Bridge Editors Many people seem confused about the gene-editing tool released by Arc Institute. How does it work and why does it matter? Fair questions. The preprint is not easy to understand, and the reasons for inventing a new gene-editing tool are not obvious... So I tried to answer both questions in my latest blog post. You may disagree with my points, but I'm really just trying to lay out the argument so we can all discuss their merits on a more level field. Link here: https://lnkd.in/e3fEQDdQ

Two large structures that once were key to NASA's successes in orbit and at the moon will soon fall back to "earth" as they are toppled at the agency's Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama. The tall-as-a-Saturn-V-rocket Dynamic Test Stand and the half-as-high Propulsion and Structural Test Facility are no longer in use and no longer safe. In their prime, they supported testing of NASA's moon-bound rocket stages and the space shuttle. Read more at collectSPACE: https://lnkd.in/gt5Ektfj

Researchers from UC San Diego and University of Maryland pointed a satellite dish at the sky for three years and monitored what unencrypted data it picked up. The results were shocking: They obtained thousands of T-Mobile users' phone calls and texts, military and law enforcement secrets, corporate and critical infrastructure communications. Their study, out today, reveals that roughly half of geostationary satellite communications they monitored were unencrypted. A flood of secrets pouring down from space, available to anyone with an $800 receiver setup. (And there's no doubt spy agencies have been listening, too.) “It just completely shocked us. There are some really critical pieces of our infrastructure relying on this satellite ecosystem, and our suspicion was that it would all be encrypted,” says Aaron Schulman, a UCSD professor who co-led the research. “And just time and time again, every time we found something new, it wasn't.” The group’s paper, which they’re presenting this week at an Association for Computing Machinery conference in Taiwan, is titled “Don’t Look Up”—a reference to the 2021 film of that title but also a phrase the researchers say describes the apparent cybersecurity strategy of the global satellite communications system. “They assumed that no one was ever going to check and scan all these satellites and see what was out there. That was their method of security,” Schulman says. “They just really didn't think anyone would look up.” Read our full story here: https://lnkd.in/eD8pviXV

🚀 AI-driven mapping captures daily global land changes 🌍 Land cover is constantly shifting under climate pressures and human activities. Yet most satellite products still miss rapid events—from sudden snow cover to floods and crop rotations. A new study in Journal of Remote Sensing (https://lnkd.in/g8qExbaf) introduces FROM-GLC Plus 3.0, a multimodal framework that fuses satellite imagery, near-surface cameras, and advanced AI models—including the Segment Anything Model (SAM)—to deliver daily, parcel-level global land change maps. 🔹 Key breakthroughs: • Overcomes cloud interference and revisit gaps by integrating dense near-surface camera data. • Achieves 70.5% accuracy, surpassing WorldCover and Dynamic World. • Captures abrupt transitions like snow accumulation in North America and wetland expansion in Europe. • Provides field-level insights into crop rotations and land use with reduced noise and sharper boundaries. 🔹 Why it matters: • Agriculture: monitor crop health, rotations, and water stress • Disaster response: enable early warning for floods and droughts • Conservation: track biodiversity habitats and degradation in real time • Climate resilience: build timely environmental intelligence for policy and planning Congratulations to Le Yu, Zhenrong Du, Xiyu Li, Jiatong Gu, Xinyue Li, Liheng Zhong, Hui Wu, Qiang Zhao, Xiaorui Ma, Yuanzheng Yang, and the many co-authors from Tsinghua University and collaborating institutions worldwide for pushing the frontier of land monitoring. #LandCover #RemoteSensing #EarthObservation #AIforEarth #ClimateResilience #EnvironmentalMonitoring #SustainableDevelopment

NEW: Johnson & Johnson-backed HistoSonics, a developer of sonic beams that attack tumours, is pursuing a sale after fielding takeover bids from several suitors. HistoSonics, which makes a non-invasive ultrasound treatment for the most aggressive form of liver cancer, is seeking a valuation of more than $2.5bn. Medical device manufacturers including Medtronic, GE HealthCare and Johnson & Johnson, which already holds a stake in the privately held group, are evaluating the business. Other suitors could emerge. The sale comes amid a dry spell for deal activity. The number of tie-ups in the Americas region in the first four months of the year dipped to its lowest level in almost a decade, but a few large transactions buoyed total deal value to $629bn, keeping it roughly flat compared with last year, according to LSEG Intelligence data. A sale could be clinched in the near future, with final bids expected in the coming weeks, though a deal may fall apart and the current owners may decide to hold on to the business, the people cautioned. HistoSonics had also tapped advisers to explore a public listing, but a sale was prioritised as market turmoil has shut down listing markets in recent weeks. https://on.ft.com/44k8b1X
